Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Senior Process Engineer (Regional Position)


Position Description:

Serve as a global process owner and subject matter expert responsible for the alignment, performance and optimization of OCS component assembly processes within the overall process engineering structure.  The individual will identify and execute process improvement and capability enhancement projects in support of the process roadmap.  He or she will review process changes to ensure global consistency and monitor global performance.  This will be done through development of deep knowledge on why the process works, process capability, performance, and control methodology. 



  • Define, document and maintain the standard for the manufacturing process, including performance level targets
    • Own the PQA certifications for the discipline, including the advancement to higher levels
    • Function as owners and change approvers of global process standards on released processes and confirm all relevant process documentation is kept up to date
    • Participate as stakeholders in new process introduction teams to ensure the global process standard is defined and delivered by the project team
  • Ensure the process is being run to standard
    • Periodic site visits to perform gemba audits against documentation of the global process standard.
    • Review of PQA and run to standard results from Tier 1 audits, coordinating appropriate action plans
    • Lead global process reviews to ensure alignment between sites
  • Identify global process trends and variations through systematic process monitoring & data analysis
    • Define periodic standard reports or control charts to be generated by Tier 1; for example OEE, TAU, sigma level, Ppk
    • Use standard reports or control charts to assess overall process trends and variations within and between plants to identify opportunities for process improvements and analyze process capability
    • Perform in-depth data-based analysis of process variables to identify performance issues and understand cause and effect relationships
  • Develop and drive execution of the process improvement roadmap
    • Gather inputs on process improvements from plant, division and quality partners
    • Consolidate and track improvement projects
  • Lead projects within the framework of the process improvement roadmap
    • Define and execute workstreams and ensure their completion
    • Provide guidance to project teams in order to accomplish goals
  • On-site support for manufacturing troubleshooting based on engineering principles and process understanding
    • Provide second line support for Tier 1 engineering when existing standard troubleshooting guides and process documentation is not sufficient for problem resolution
  • Ensure consistent evaluation of processes changes through structured experimental plans, statistical data analysis, qualification and change control
    • Document process changes through a formal change evaluation and control system such as PEQS and Windchill
  • Promote Process Engineering as a rigorous discipline with comprehensive training program
    • Serve as process engineering champions by demonstrating engineering rigor, mentoring junior process engineers and promoting process engineering development


Travel Requirements: up to 15%


Hours of work:

  • Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm as a base schedule.
  • Schedule will need to be flexed periodically to accommodate other time zones


Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent


Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 5-10 years experience in plant engineering or an engineering support role to a manufacturing operation.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), English skills > 80%

  • Green Belt Certification or 6-Sigma Equivalent
  • Project leadership skills, including multi-cultural teams
  • Expertise in change management and documentation control systems
  • Strong computer and data management skills
  • Understanding of Process Control and Process Discipline tools
    • Statistical tools such as statistical process control, hypothesis testing, sampling plans, capability analysis
    • Experimental design and analysis
    • Training in KT and MEE
  • Ability to engage with shop floor personnel and with plant leadership
  • Able to communicate through remote means (conference calls, email, IM)
  • Professional written and spoken communication


Process Discipline Specific Skills:

  • Knowledge of optical connectors, including construction, assembly and performance measures
  • Knowledge of automated equipment, including overall maintenance strategies
  • Knowledge of TPM
