Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

Functions as a technical resource and serve as owner for Released Products and Standard Processes across Value Streams responsible for product integrity, reliability, and Change Control of released OCS products of assigned product lines.  

Responsible for leading product teams to resolve performance and customer-related issues and cost reductions while assuring the products Fit, Form and Function

Participate in project execution between development and plant manufacturing as an impartial 3rd party with the expertise to balance risks between business demands and product assurance.

Provides subject matter expertise in engineering that improves product performance (cost, quality, and service)

Designs and analyze first generation / next generation of products, support of a new product / technology introduction. Maintains knowledge of the latest developments in their area of expertise to identify and document any intellectual property developed as part of a project

Key Responsibilities

  • Clarify, understand and document Product Specifications, and understand product applications
  • Leader and Subject Matter Expert (SME) in products, and in the usage of tools like DOE, SPC, SQC, OEE, Designed Experiments, and other Performance Excellence processes (Green and Black-belt skills)
  • Ensure FIT, FORM, FUNCTION through appropriate qualification test plans, design control and change approval while balancing speed to market and profitability for approval /reject on proposed changes on released products
  • Timely and effectively respond to customer and commercial requests for Product changes
  • Provides leadership in problem solving, and technical expertise, to ensure timely resolution of short-term process and equipment issues, and higher-level troubleshooting
  • Provides directions to other technicians / engineers, coaches junior engineers, and provides guidance to maintenance personnel
  • Provides disciplined project leadership across multiple stages of innovation for new products, processes, cost reduction and capacity improvement initiatives
  • Develops and leads some areas of the manufacturing and/or technical roadmap. Documents material, process outputs and/or equipment to protect and contribute to Intellectual Property improvements
  • Introducing new products, configurations, and technologies
  • Active partner with Product Development (FAST) on rapid adaptations of released products 
  • Develops SME knowledge of material, process and/or equipment in focused areas of manufacturing or engineering to gain fundamental understanding related to the impact on the products.
  • Document and communicate product and process risks assessment, impact, and resolution proposals. 
  • Coordinates product launch, debugging and initial runs of new product

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical area/Mechanical, Electromechanical or Engineering degree
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in manufacturing, development, product, or process engineering
