Sr. Project Engineer

Purpose of Position: Serve as an electrical controls resource for the Divisional Engineering team driving new automated equipment development and deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide electrical and controls engineering expertise in support of new automated equipment development and deployment
  • Provide electrical and controls engineering expertise in redesigning existing automated equipment and further development and deployment
  • Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated automation equipment to Corning’s plants on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures. 
  • Actively participate / direct all phases of the project including design, fabrication, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel and technology transfer. 
  • Subject matter expert in control systems (PLC, HMI, Motion Control Systems, Machine Vision), system integration, sensors and electro-mechanical devices. 
  • Ensure all controls engineering projects are documented properly with electrical drawing packages conforming to Corning standards. 
  • Work with project team to solve automation problems, resolve project related issues, and develop fundamental understanding of technical / process requirements critical to system success 
  • Develop control architectures and system integration requirements that will satisfy process and manufacturing requirements. 
  • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments, in a team-based environment, with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 2+ years of electrical / controls experience 

Required Skills

  • Fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, control systems integration, controls, architectures, electro-mechanical drive systems, and safety systems 
  • Experience with programming PLCs and HMIs 
  • Ability to design and program motion control systems 
  • Ability to understand and update electrical schematics using Autocad Electrical
  • Ability to perform a machine safety risk assessment 
  • Experienced in the design and troubleshooting of electrical control panels 
  • Must be a team player in addition to making individual contributions
  • Allen Bradley servo setup, control, and tuning
  • IAI servo setup, control, and tuning
  • Experience with Keyence, Cognex, Matrox vision systems

Desired Skills

  • Project Management Skills 
  • Omron, AB PLC and HMI programming skills 
  • Knowledge of SCADA (GE iFix, Ignition, or similar)
  • Prior experience moving a new product or process from development into manufacturing 
  • Prior experience in the optical fiber industry
  • Prior experience redesigning existing equipment
