Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Tooling Engineer

 

Purpose of Position: Serve as a Tooling Engineer for the Division Engineering team driving and supporting development and deployment of new automated equipment, fixtures and product/process design solutions in support of Design For Manufacturing.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide design and mechanical engineering expertise in support of new automated equipment development and deployment
  • Designs production fixtures, assembly fixtures, handling fixtures, drill jigs, machining fixtures, test fixtures, inspection fixtures, and other tooling required for manufacturing, handling and test
  • Develop and build quick and effective mechanical solutions to aid manual assembly operations in support of Design For Manufacturing
  • Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, strength, contractual specification requirements, and cost
  • Contributes to the design of major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations
  • Utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) equipment, develops basic data, completes preliminary analysis for material sizing, and makes preliminary layouts, sketches and notes necessary to present design proposals and/or concepts to internal and external customers
  • Creates layouts and drawings of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures
  • Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning
  • Provide electrical and controls engineering expertise in redesigning existing automated equipment and further development and deployment
  • Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated automation equipment to Corning’s plants on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures
  • Actively participate / direct all phases of the project including design, fabrication, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel and technology transfer
  • Subject matter expert in control systems (PLC, HMI, Motion Control Systems, Machine Vision), system integration, sensors and electro-mechanical devices
  • Ensure all controls engineering projects are documented properly with electrical drawing packages conforming to Corning standards
  • Work with project team to solve automation problems, resolve project related issues, and develop fundamental understanding of technical / process requirements critical to system success 
  • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments, in a team-based environment, with minimal supervision

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 5+ Mechanical design (Fixture design /solution proven already / electrical experience)

 

Required Skills

  • Ability to design Mechanical systems for manufacturing solutions DFM oriented
  • Use AutoCAD to analyze existing tooling designs and improve them
  • Ability to understand and update electrical schematics using Autocad Electrical
  • Develop blueprints for new Tooling designs
  • Ability to perform a machine safety risk assessment 
  • Must be efficient in 3D design software
  • Must be efficient with surfacing and solid modeling
  • Ability to evaluate the correct materials for manufacturing designs
  • Develop mechanical fixtures designs easy to interpret and fabricate for implementation
  • Understand manufacturing cost impact on mechanical designs
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
  • Design of all tooling and fixturing through development, release, build, and life cycle management
  • Coordinate tooling fabrication with Tool Room employees
  • Provide technical advice and expertise to solve manufacturing equipment and tooling problems in a timely manner to achieve production plans on time and within budget to ensure continuity of production
  • Work with Tooling and Maintenance department to facilitate any repairs which need the tool room to build or modify parts for equipment which may either be worn or broken
  • Fundamental understanding, electrical design practices, control systems integration, electro-mechanical drive systems, and safety systems 

 

Desired Skills

  • Experience with Total Preventive Maintenance and Early Equipment Management (EEM)
  • Product Quality Architecture understanding (for internal candidates)
  • Project Management Skills 
  • Omron, AB PLC and HMI programming skills 
  • Knowledge of SCADA (GE iFix, Ignition, or similar)
  • Experience designing error-proofing solutions for new product and processes
  • Prior experience in the optical fiber industry
  • Experience with programming PLCs and HMIs 
  • Prior experience redesigning existing equipment
  • GD&T understanding to be able to follow the industry standards
