Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position
The purpose of this position is to collaborate, design, validate and implement packaging solutions that encompass 3 key areas around cost savings, sustainability and meeting customer requirements. All of these areas are integral parts of the OCS Packaging Program within Corning and include innovation, standardization and optimization of existing packaging solutions to deliver improvements in cost, capability, and quality, and providing manufacturing and commercial support for packaging related issues. The Packaging Engineer will collaborate with internal and external partners to identify appropriate packaging materials and develop packaging designs that meet specifications and value added customer requirements. The Packaging Engineer will work with internal cross functional team partnerships - including Product Line Management, Sourcing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Logistics, Sustainability, customer facing roles and key packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging and support Corning OCS Packaging Program KPIs.
Day to Day Responsibilities
- Design and develop primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging for new and existing products.
- Plan and execute packaging tests/validations to meet performance, regulatory, and sustainability requirements.
- Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Line, Supply Chain/Logistics, and Commercial/Customers to deliver packaging solutions.
- Support packaging line trials and resolve packaging-related issues in production.
- Evaluate new materials, technologies, and suppliers; recommend options that improve cost, quality, and sustainability.
- Own packaging total cost assessment (materials, conversion, freight/distribution, and end-of-life impacts).
- Provide technical support for packaging materials and designs across manufacturing, quality, logistics, and commercial teams.
- Define packaging requirements and implement improvements that enhance capability, quality, and cost for new and existing products.
- Maintain specifications and documentation (test reports, project summaries, and proposals) for packaging designs and processes.
- Collaborate with packaging suppliers to develop and qualify new packaging solutions.
- Share best practices and align standards with packaging engineering teams across regions.
- Support packaging development activities from concept through implementation, including feasibility assessments and qualifications.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Science or Mechanical Engineering
- Familiarity with packaging materials (plastics, paperboard, corrugate, etc.) and processes.
- Basic understanding of packaging testing standards (ISTA, ASTM).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Internship or co-op experience in packaging or manufacturing preferred

- Knowledge of sustainable packaging solutions is a plus
