Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Day to Day Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain quality plans, control plans, inspection standards, sampling plans, acceptance criteria, test methods, and reaction plans for incoming, in-process, and finished products.
- Monitor product and process performance using inspection results, SPC, capability analysis, and quality data; identify risks and drive timely containment and corrective actions.
- Lead structured problem solving for process, product, and customer quality issues; verify root cause, corrective action effectiveness, and prevention of recurrence.
- Partner with Manufacturing and Engineering to define critical-to-quality characteristics, critical process parameters, and robust process controls.
- Support process and product qualification, measurement-system validation, manufacturing changes, new product introduction, and product or process transfer.
- Manage supplier quality activities, including qualification, audits, performance monitoring, process changes, nonconformance management, corrective actions, and supplier development.
- Define incoming-material controls and work with suppliers and internal teams to resolve material issues, improve capability, and reduce supply-related quality risk.
- Maintain supplier quality records and provide clear status updates on supplier risks, corrective actions, and improvement projects.
- Implement and improve Quality Management System processes, including document and record control, change control, training, nonconformance and CAPA, internal audit, and management review.
- Plan and perform quality system, process, product, and supplier audits; document findings, track actions, and verify effective closure.
- Ensure effective control of nonconforming material and maintain accurate quality records, procedures, work instructions, risk assessments, and quality metrics.
- Collaborate with Corning Supplier Quality teams and cross-functional stakeholders to align priorities, resolve supplier quality issues, and share best practices.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Materials Science, or an equivalent technical discipline.
- 3-5 years of experience in quality engineering, preferably covering process or product quality together with supplier quality or quality systems.
- Experience in manufacturing process control, supplier management, audits, and structured problem solving is preferred.
- CQE, ISO 9001 auditor, DMAIC Green Belt, or equivalent qualification is preferred.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Required Skills
- Understand and comply with applicable quality, regulatory, legal, EHS, and company requirements relevant to assigned products, processes, and manufacturing locations.
- Strong knowledge of process quality control, product quality control, quality planning, process qualification, inspection strategy, and production release requirements.
- Hands-on experience developing control plans, inspection plans, reaction plans, CTQ definitions, quality records, and statistical controls such as SPC and Cpk.
- Familiar with quality tools and methodologies, including 8D, 5Why, fishbone analysis, QC tools, SPC, FMEA, MSA, Cpk, APQP, DMAIC, risk assessment, and root cause analysis.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, product specifications, process requirements, inspection standards, and release criteria.
- Working knowledge of measurement systems, inspection methods, gauges, test equipment, calibration control, MSA, and equipment readiness requirements for pilot and mass production.
- Understanding of optical communication products, precision assembly processes, FAT/SAT, pilot builds, process qualification, production readiness, and CM manufacturing environments.
- Familiar with quality management systems, including ISO 9001 and TL 9000; knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 is preferred.
- Strong data analysis and reporting skills, with proficiency in Excel, Minitab, PowerPoint, and other tools used for quality analysis, trend monitoring, and management review.
