R&D Control Engineer

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • As a system control window person work on R&D projects and provide expertise in the broad fields related to system design, control, mechanical process, chemical process or electrical process.
  • Collaborate with process / mechanical engineer to develop fundamental understanding of critical process and technical requirements, identify areas of technical risk in assigned projects, conduct prototype / feasibility testing to verify concept, and define and document system design specifications / requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to translate process requirements into controls designs and methodologies to ensure process quality.
  • Produce appropriate documentation of controls architecture to facilitate clear communication of requirements to internal and external resources.
  • Interface with vendors to select components that meet the needs of the equipment under development.
  • Develop robust code that delivers desired functionality from equipment under development.
  • Create intuitive Human Machine Interfaces on PC / PLC based platforms to deliver desired level of control and feedback from machines and testing apparatus.
  • Work directly with internal IT resources to implement network connectivity and appropriate permissions to ensure equipment functionality.
  • Perform debugging and modification of new and existing equipment to facilitate development activities.
  • Work with mechanical and process designers to resolve issues and guide best practices.
  • Coordinate with internal / external resources to ensure that hardware, software, and the related documentation stay in sync via appropriate change management tools and processes.
  • Design and implement test plans to validate that equipment meets functional requirements and prepare written reports summarizing findings.
  • Perform safety analyses and compliance assessments via identification of key risks and issues in order to comply with applicable standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate across development, engineering, and manufacturing organizations to transfer technology from research, development to manufacturing scale environments.
  • Partner with internal Science and Technology teams to translate new capabilities from research to development and lead experimentation to demonstrate feasibility in application.
  • Capture intellectual property through innovation process.
  • Be capable of executing project assignments, in a team-based environment, with minimal supervision.


Education & Experience  

  • Master’s degree and / or above in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Electronic Engineering, Control Theory & Engineering, Measurement & Instrument, Computer Engineering or equivalent
  • >5 years of demonstrated work experience in R&D organization, research labs, engineering, manufacturing or equivalent.


Required Skills                                                

  • Demonstrated technical leadership with the technical curiosity to drive root cause understanding and foundational solutions.
  • Experience resolving complex problems based on theoretical analysis and structured problem-solving methodology.
  • Ability to develop, scale and transfer technology across research, development, engineering and manufacturing.
  • Broad knowledge of automation, control, hardware, software and system integration.
  • Broad understanding of Electrical standard, safety and code compliance.
  • Fundamental understanding of classical control - Linear feedback control PID, cascade control, Logic & sequence control, Single input single output (SISO) etc.
  • Demonstrated hands-on PLC programming skills and experience in process & automation control. (Rockwell, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Omron etc.)
  • Familiar with industrial communication protocol. (RS232/RS48, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Profibus, CAN, Modbus, CC-Link, EtherNet/IP, Profinet, TCP/IP etc.)
  • Solid knowledge and experience in process data collection techniques such as temperature, fluid flow, mechanic force, pressure, composition concentration, electrical etc.


Desired Skills  

  • Understanding of modern control is a plus – (Fuzzy, Adaptive, Optimal robust and prediction control, Sliding control, MIMO, Nonlinear control, Neuro network, etc.)
  • Experience in PCB / SCM design is a plus
  • SCADA systems design and development for manufacturing operation and process control is a plus. (GE iFix, FactoryTalk View, WinCC)
  • Experience in at least one of the programming skills – (Matlab, VC/VB, C/C++, C#/Java, SQL database etc.)
  • Experience with development using labview is a plus.
  • Experience in the preparation of controls drawings using CAD software (or similar).
  • Experience in designing experiments (DOE).
  • Excellent project management skills (planning, resource management, conflict resolution, able to meet deadlines).
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills using advanced data analysis tools.
