Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

The position is focused on the Photonics Connectivity Solutions (PCS) business, a high-growth organization developing passive optical connectivity for next-generation AI infrastructure, including co-packaged optics. The Senior Packaging Engineer will work cross functionally with Product Line Management, Desing/ Engineering, Sourcing, Supply Chain, Logistics, Sustainability, and external suppliers to develop clean, protective, and scalable packaging solutions that meet product requirements, support manufacturing and commercialization, and improve packaging performance across the business.

Within Optical Communications, the company is expanding its role in AI data center infrastructure through the PCS business, which delivers advanced optical connectivity solutions that support the performance, cleanliness, and reliability requirements of co-packaged optics and other high-value photonic applications.

  • Lead end-to-end packaging projects for PCS products, including co-packaged optics, with clear project plans, risk mitigation, and stakeholder communication
  • Design and implement packaging solutions for sensitive optical and photonic products that meet cleanroom, cleanliness, and product protection requirements
  • Develop and qualify cleanroom-compatible packaging materials and formats, including low-particulate, low-outgassing, ESD-safe, and moisture-barrier solutions
  • Validate packaging performance through distribution, shock, vibration, environmental, seal integrity, and cleanliness testing to protect product quality through global logistics
  • Drive improvements in cost, quality, manufacturability, sustainability, and customer experience across packaging systems
  • Troubleshoot and resolve packaging-related issues across manufacturing, distribution, and customer quality environments
  • Partner with engineering, product line management, sourcing, supply chain, logistics, and suppliers to develop and scale packaging solutions
  • Create technical documentation for packaging design, validation, process control, and site implementation
  • Share best practices and mentor engineers to strengthen packaging capability across sites and functions

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering from accredited university program preferred.  Bachelor’s degree in Engineering of a comparable discipline acceptable
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in packaging engineering roles
  • Strong knowledge of packaging materials, design, and processes
  • Experience packaging sensitive optical, fiber, or photonics products with protection against contamination, abrasion, moisture, and ESD
  • Knowledge of cleanroom-compatible materials and controlled-environment packaging, including particulate control, low-outgassing materials, and handling of intricate assemblies
  • Ability to select packaging materials that balance ESD protection, mechanical protection, optical cleanliness, and sustainability
  • Strong project management and cross-functional leadership skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to use historical and experimental data to determine optimal solutions
  • Knowledge of sustainability principles, including packaging material recyclability
  • Advanced English verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced MS Office proficiency and strong collaboration skills
  • Effective stakeholder communication skills for written, verbal, and project updates

  • Experience with cleanroom-compatible packaging for co-packaged optics and other sensitive photonic or electronic assemblies
  • Knowledge of innovative packaging materials and processes, including low-particulate, low-outgassing, ESD-safe, and moisture-barrier solutions
  • Experience validating packaging for high-value, fragile products through distribution, environmental, and cleanliness testing
  • Ability to scale packaging designs from development to manufacturing with strong process control and supplier collaboration
  • Project management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional implementation of new packaging solutions
