Corning’s Display Technologies segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (“LCDs”) that are used primarily in LCD televisions, notebook computers and flat panel desktop monitors.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support display customer complex technical problem solving involving glass attributes, mechanical reliability, solid and fracture mechanics. 
    • Using engineering approach, define customer problem definition and develop leading hypothesis of potential root cause.
    • Validate technical hypothesis either through physical experimental or analytical modeling. 
    • Collaborate with cross-functional commercial and technical team to provide timely customer problem resolution.
  • Perform measurement of glass interactions with display system and if necessary, develop analytical modeling capabilities.
    • Establish and implement experimental plan necessary to characterize glass performance and interactions in display system. 
    • Develop analytical modeling capabilities for critical glass attributes. Depending on the technical problem statement, this could include first principle engineering calculation or analytical model like FEA (finite element analysis).
  • Participate or lead Display Innovation special projects that could involve new product concepts, complex customer problem solving and other critical business related projects.
    • Take leading role in scoping, gain agreement among stakeholders and execute long range display projects. 
    • Assess product requirements, match with Corning capability, potential technical solution path(s), competitive position together with appropriate RD&E resources.
       

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • MS or PhD in Glass Science, Material Science or Mechanical Engineering; preference for expertise in solid mechanics, fracture mechanics or FEA (finite element analysis) of brittle materials. 

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Preference for 5 years of industry experience; can be substituted for university research experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Wide range knowledge glass science and technologies.
  • Strong preference for individuals that enjoy innovation and aspire to be leading display technical expert. 
  • Ability to operate in highly matrix organization with multiple reporting structures.  Ability to collaborative across functions; pulling in needed skills from research, development, engineering, commercial and manufacturing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, ability to stay calm under difficult situations and communicate clearly across organization.
  • Solid mechanical modeling experience as plus

  • Preference for hands-on approach to problem solving and innovation.
