For our location in Helsinki, Finland, we are looking for a
Sr. Scientist CFD - Heat and Mass Transfer
Location
- The Corning Scientific Center in Helsinki operates as a critical part of the Modeling & Computing Technologies group that services Corning’s global RD&E organization. We work closely with experimentalist partners around the globe to apply modeling capabilities to increase the pace of Corning’s innovation in addition to collaborating internally with business and across Research, Development, Engineering, and commercial technology.
Scope of position
- Develop and apply computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and heat transfer simulations as well as analytical tools, with a focus on free surface modeling for various applications.
- Scientist, responsible for modeling of new processes and/or process conditions for improved product attributes or reduced cost for different production processes, with an emphasis on gaining a fundamental understanding of the underlying principles.
- Candidate must have a strong foundation in fluid mechanics and a high level of expertise in numerical modeling.
- This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with globally distributed researchers, engineers in our commercial organizations, and customers.
Day to Day Responsibilities
- Research and development in the area of CFD and heat transfer, specifically in glass and polymer forming.
- Utilizing fluid mechanics modeling to understand the performance of processes, optimize parameters, and improve designs, manufacturing processes, and defect analysis.
- Provide expertise and recommendation on new capabilities or method developments related to glass and polymer forming.
- Engage with the businesses as needed to help with addressing reliability concerns/questions from customers and other product engineering related problems.
- Writing technical reports, invention disclosures, & publications.
Required Education
- Ph.D./M.S. in CFD, heat transfer, applied Math & Physics, or a related field.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated ability to develop CFD models and heat transfer simulations meeting application requirements with an emphasis on building the fundamental knowledge underpinning the model performance.
- Proficient in fluid dynamics and heat transfer principles.
- Proficient in numerical methods and simulation software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, OpenFOAM).
- Ability to use Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint.
- Technical writing and oral presentations.
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Desired Skills
- 1+ yrs. of work experience in similar field preferred
- Familiarity with different glass forming technologies.
- Experience in modeling complex rheology fluids (e.g. polymers)
- Experience with SPH/FPM software packages.
- Experience with HPC & Linux.
Travel Requirements:
- Intermittent, generally no more than 2-3 times a year.
