Position Description

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

Work as part of a team on projects for Corning in areas such as Data Mining, Management and Analytics. Apply new/emerging technology and methods to a variety of data problems.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work independently or as part of the team on various aspects of High Performance Data Analytics:

a. Data Mining and ingestion from a variety of sources

b. Participate in Corning Research and Manufacturing projects

c. Develop applications and API’s for data consumption

  • Develop and maintain software and applications for Data Analytics and Machine Learning
  • Identify data analytics challenges and convert them into projects as appropriate.
  • Write and maintain relevant support documentation.
  • Prepare and deliver relevant user training.

Travel requirements (please note if international):

  • Individual may travel 1-2 times per year for 1-2 weeks to other Corning locations

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Mon-Fri, regular business hours 8h/5d.

Education and Experience:

  • MS/PhD in computer science, mathematics, materials science, physics or related discipline.
  • 2+ years of software development, data science or modeling experiences in scientific computing or HPC fields.
  • 1+ year of project leadership and positive customer interactions.

Required Skills:

  • Strong skills in Statistics and Applied Mathematics
  • Strong programming skills in one or several mainstream languages such as Python, R and Java.
  • A foundation in software design principles and an ability to design and create code as necessary.
  • Web Development Skills (HTML, Django, RESTFul APIs, JSON Documents)
  • Strong knowledge of databases and SQL.
  • Background in or familiarity with one or more scientific disciplines (e.g. physics, chemistry, or engineering) and some knowledge of data science.
  • Ability to communicate with and understand the complex requirements of scientists, engineers and professional staff in the deployment of scientific computing solutions.
  • Working knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems.
  • Fluent Russian and advanced English speaking skills required.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical computing programming languages (MATLAB, R).
  • Knowledge of Apache Hadoop and NoSQL software frameworks.
  • Experience with revision control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Experience providing user support or code development support in scientific computing environment.
  • Experience with agile development approaches, automated unit testing / test-first design.
