Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
The measurements organization provides measurement solutions to Corning’s Optical Connectivity business to deliver best in class products to our customers. This position requires knowledge in fiber optics manufacturing process to provide technical leadership and support to Corning product testing and inspection processes across different regions.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with experienced professionals across a variety of functional groups (manufacturing, development engineering, New Product Introduction team, IT, etc.) to develop and implement precision measurement methods and optical fiber inspection systems, for emerging products.
- Provide global expert-level support to manufacturing engineering and operations teams for both existing and new products, including system troubleshooting and root cause analysis on product integrity/performance opportunities.
- Support the development of roadmaps for measurement processes and equipment, focusing on improving equipment reliability, reducing measurement error, enabling automation and metrology, and cost reductions.
- Design and execute measurement system analysis, experiments and analyze data to prove capability or improve measurement systems for manual or automated cells, for single-core and multi-core fiber assemblies.
- Transfer measurement technology from other location/region or in early-stage development to a system ready for use in a manufacturing environment.
- Develop and manage documentation for measurement system deployments.
- Train plant manufacturing and regional associates on the use and maintenance of measurement systems.
- Leverage external suppliers with key technologies or systems integration expertise to develop, procure, build, and install test equipment for capacity expansion needs.
- Support the worldwide testing alignment strategies including external manufacturing.
Required Education, Years and Area of Experience:
- BS in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics, or Physics.
- 3+ years of work experience in measurement engineering, process engineering, or related area.
- MBA or similar would be considered as a substitute for years of experience.
Required Skills:
- Strong project management and multitasking abilities.
- Excellent communication skills (English), with the ability to deliver clear updates to leadership and collaborate effectively across global, cross-functional teams.
- Strong problem-solving, root cause analysis, and decision-making capabilities, using a combination of analytical thinking, practical judgement, and data analysis.
- Experience in participating in design review meetings.
- Knowledge on statistical tools and software (e.g., Minitab), such as hypothesis testing, SPC, DOE, capability studies, control charts, and measurement systems analysis (MSA), Gage R&R, and uncertainty analysis.
- Experience with CAD tools for interpreting and generating mechanical, optical, and electrical drawings and design systems layouts.
- General computer and, IT and networking knowledge, with the ability to support system troubleshooting and improvement in manufacturing environments.
- Accountable for actions/behaviors.
Desired Skills:
- Scientific curiosity, inventive mindset, and a solid understanding of manufacturing principles and environments.
- Applied knowledge of measurement science in fiber optics, including surface profiling interferometry, microscopy, refractometry, optical attenuation, reflectometry, surface profile interferometry, and video microscopy (end-face inspection).
- Knowledge on modal dispersion, mode coupling, and connector loss mechanisms in multi-mode and multi-core fibers.
- Experience in machine vision systems for manufacturing (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition) and basic image processing knowledge.
- Hands-on experience with computer-based measurement and automation equipment, including system design, setup, support, data systems architecture, and instrument cycle time studies.
- Proficiency with advanced modeling and statistical analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, ZMax) and general SQL knowledge.
- Machine Learning, computer vision understanding. Python programming experience.
- Experience with computer-based measurement or automation equipment, design, setup, support and data systems architecture.
- Demonstrated use of advance software for modeling and/or statistical analysis (e.g. MatLab and ZMax).
