We are seeking a mechanical engineer to develop new applications for Corning’s unique materials. Candidates should have a deep understanding of mechanical design concepts, knowledge of materials properties, experience with CAD tools, and the ability to fabricate and assemble prototypes. This is an opportunity to work with talented interdisciplinary teams that span the globe. This position, Research Associate, Mechanical, is in the Applied Physics group of Corning’s Science and Technology Division and located in Sunnyvale, CA. The Applied Physics group works with research collaborators, customers, and technology partners to understand the requirements of emerging optical applications and develop novel solutions that can be efficiently manufactured. Our projects are fast-paced, and we expect team members to collaborate closely with other researchers and engineers of different backgrounds and Corning business teams.


Day to Day Responsibilities: 

  • Work with customers, partners, and cross-functional team members to investigate emerging applications and determine critical requirements.
  • Initiate or contribute to research projects to create new industry-changing product categories leveraging Corning materials and processes
  • Identify and evaluate potential system design concepts to meet performance targets and satisfy form-factor, environmental and manufacturing constraints
  • Design, prototype and test actuators and mounts for optical components for proof-of-concept systems.


Required Education: BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field


Required Skills:

5 years of experience demonstrating skills below:


  • Ability to determine technical specifications from system requirements and customer feedback
  • Demonstrated CAD experience (SolidWorks, Pro-E, AutoCAD, Inventor or similar)
  • Demonstrated numerical modeling of physical systems (SolidWorks, COMSOL, Ansys or similar)
  • Ability to fabricate moderate precision devices (manual & automated tools) and work with external fabrication vendors 
  • Ability to design and build mechanical and optomechanical laboratory systems to enable material, component, and sub-system measurements
  • Able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team


Desired Skills: 

  • Design electro-mechanical lab prototype devices and systems
  • Metrology experience (microscope, interferometer and/or SEM)
  • CAD/CAM for laboratory or commercial fabrication
  • Experience with Matlab/Python to acquire/analyze data
