Scope of position:

This position, Senior Research Scientist, Optical Physics, is in the Applied Physics Research group at Corning’s Technology Center in Sunnyvale CA. The Applied Physics group works with customers and technology partners to understand the requirements of emerging optical applications and collaborates with materials scientists and optical physicists to develop optical components that enable best-in-class performance.

 

We are seeking candidates with a deep knowledge of the physics and materials science of nanostructured materials and a strong background in optics. Candidates should be familiar with electromagnetic-based modeling tools, nanofabrication technologies and precision optical measurement techniques. Our projects are fast-paced, and we expect team members to collaborate closely with material scientists, system designers and business teams across Corning.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Investigate emerging applications for optical metasurfaces and other novel optical materials.
  • Determine the requirements for new products and understand what drives them
  • Develop device and system designs to meet optical performance and satisfy form-factor, environmental and manufacturing constraints.
  • Use analytical and numerical tools to models and optimize optical systems
  • Build and test prototype devices in the lab
  • Invent differentiated components and sub-systems and protect with patent applications

 

Required Education:

  • MS or Ph.D. in Optical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience using electromagnetic/physical optical design tools, numerical and analytical
  • Deep technical understanding of light-matter interactions, metamaterials and physical optics
  • Understanding of fabrication techniques and their capabilities
  • Experience using programming/scripting tools such as Python, Matlab, Ruby, PERL, C/C++

 

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of optical modeling tools based on raytracing (such as Zemax, Code V, LightTools) and familiarity with their limitations
  • Ability to learn new technologies and applications quickly and deeply
  • Entrepreneurial
  • Experience working in technical and multifunctional teams including multiple locations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

 

Travel Requirements:

  • < 20%, domestic and some international travel required

The range for this position is $106,418 - $146,325. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
