Brief Description of Role:

 

  • Subject matter expert in equipment and automation processes and drives fundamental understanding across Corning’s Life Sciences Division.
  • Equipment and automation process support for Division-wide or multi-plant projects, with primary focus in Asia.
  • Maintain knowledge of the latest technology developments within the manufacturing equipment and automation industry, while supporting the consistent application of new technology and best practices. 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a regional Equipment and Automation Strategy and ensure alignment with Division Equipment and Automation Strategy
  • Champions continuous improvement activities, including new technology implementation and fundamental process understanding, in support of cost reduction and quality improvement projects.
  • Ensures Corning's Intellectual Property management process is followed and any intellectual property developed as part of a project is properly documented.

 

Description of Work:

 

  • Assess the capabilities of local equipment and automation vendors and how they could support the regional Equipment and Automation Strategy.
  • Support of Division Quality’s Validation Strategy by developing equipment and automation validation protocols to be executed by plant engineering.
  • Serve as process equipment technology receiver for product transfers to regional (Asia) plants (including local knowledge management, establishing ongoing support structure, and development of validation protocols to be executed by plant engineering).
  • Provide technical and business direction in the specification, development, installation and testing of manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
  • Create project plans (scope, schedule, cost estimates, project acceptance criteria, etc.) for assigned area of responsibility. Establish receivership requirements for project.
  • Lead capital spending projects as assigned. Manage schedule and resource conflicts.
  • Understand customer equipment and capacity needs.  Ensure their expectations are being met.
  • Coach and mentor engineering personnel as appropriate to build and leverage skill sets to enhance the project team’s effectiveness.
  • Develop short and long-term equipment strategies to achieve process production, quality, safety and financial goals. 
  • Interface with and support Research & Development and Division Engineering on new product introductions, process enhancements, raw material changes, and equipment design modifications.
  • Ensure all engineering related activities are conducted in accordance with established design and process control procedures.
  • Be an advocate and role model for safety within their area of responsibility. Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner and environment.  Responsible for his/her safety, as well as that of others that may be at the facility, whether working or visiting.  Responsible for observing safe work practices and being proactive for reporting any unsafe conditions.
  • Utilize Lean manufacturing principles to reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Documenting SOP, SOS, experiment planning, and process changes.
  • Support manufacturing on multiple shift schedules in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Actively participate in project meetings and document key issues, action items and decisions.
  • Effectively participate in all phases of project methodologies to include appropriate initiation, planning, implementation and control, and close-out elements.
  • Share expertise and knowledge to foster continuous improvement of the organization (project team or functional unit).

 

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 40%, including International Travel

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time

  • M-F 40+ hrs.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Bachelor of Science in Engineering

Minimum of 8 years in engineering, equipment/process/product development, systems integration, or process equipment design and implementation

 

Experience:

Required

Knowledge of manufacturing methods, systems, production processes, and controls systems, including PLCs

Demonstrated delivery of results through project and organizational leadership

Demonstrated track record of performance results and people development

Demonstrated track record of engineering/technical accomplishment

Excellent inter-personal and communication skills (written and verbal)

Project Management skills

CAD experience, preferably Solidworks

Bi-lingual (English/Chinese)
