Role Purpose

This is a process control engineering position within Corning Display Technologies engineering group. The position will be focused on the design, development, and implementation of process controls solutions to improve manufacturing process. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical curiosity and a desire for project leadership opportunities. There will be a large emphasis on the application of controls theory, as well as strong interpersonal skills to function effectively within cross-functional and global project teams. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work individually or alongside other experienced professionals to design, develop and implement process controls solutions for manufacturing processes
  • Define the appropriate platform for implementing process control solutions
  • Evaluate existing control strategies and propose improvements  
  • Work with process SMEs to identify promising areas for applying process control solutions
  • Conduct design of experiments (DOE) to gather process related data, and identify multi-variant relationships
  • Develop and apply process controls skills to implement controls solutions ranging from PID to multivariate model predictive control, and other classic and non-classic controls schemes
  • Evaluate readiness of process control solutions from R&D organizations, and facilitate the technology transfer into manufacturing
  • Documentation of designs and experimental results

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelors or Masters in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with a concentration in control theory. 2-5 years’ experience in process controls design and implementation. Masters highly preferred with coursework in advanced process controls.
  • Working experience as a control engineer use process control to automate and control operational variables such as flow rates, temperatures, for example Petrochemical or Glass industries is a plus.

Required Skills

  • Willing to understand Corning hot-end process and then apply the engineering solution for process improvement and optimization as a process controls expert.
  • Motivated self-starter with an independent learning style
  • Strong understanding and practical application of classical control theory, including PID control loop tuning and more advanced techniques (cascade, frequency analysis, model identification, etc.)
  • Programming experience in MATLAB, C# or similar programming language to perform data analysis, signal processing, control design, controls system performance analysis and tuning, and plot generation
  • Desire to develop deep process understanding

Desired Skills

Strong understanding or a great desire and ability to learn:

  • Model Predictive Control/Optimal Control
  • Database design and data mining / analysis tools
  • Multi-variant statistical analysis (PCA, PLS), machine learning knowledge
  • Control hardware and software (PLC, HMI, SCADA/DCS, etc.)
  • Object-oriented programming languages
