Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The Engineering Manager will be a key leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of manufacturing engineering within the Corning Optical Communications Co-Packaged Optics Program. This position will drive the long-term automation and process manufacturing strategy. The Engineering Manager will work with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement efficient manufacturing processes, ensuring this fast moving business can scale at high quality and low-cost. This leader will work with other functional leaders to leverage existing processes and equipment or direct technical teams to develop new ones to meet this challenge.
Key Responsibilities
• Own the automation and process engineering strategy for Co-Packaged Optics
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and develop new manufacturing processes, ensuring seamless integration of advanced technologies and best practices.
• Support drive to long-term cost leadership
• Support movement of development equipment into manufacturing
• Own the PI sheets and specifications with support from CT and PLM
• Lead the buy versus build analysis for new equipment
• Support defining equipment requirements for new equipment development in technology and integration plan with manufacturing and SCM
• Lead yield improvement “war-rooms” with support from BTD and Manufacturing for root-cause analysis and implementation
• Manage resources that ensure all Environmental, Safety and Health requirements for projects are met
• Support IT programs and help define priorities for manufacturing
• Staff innovation programs, short-term capacity, and long-term cost leadership teams
Experiences/Education - Required
• Bachelor of Science in Engineering Filed (preferred but not a must: Mechanical Engineering, Systems, Industrial, Mechatronic, Electronic or similar)
• Minimum of 7+ years of relative experience with equipment design and delivering and supporting systems in manufacturing.
Required Skills:
• Experience in optical or electronic manufacturing
• Experience in scaling innovations or new products
• Experience in semi-conductor industry
• Experience in engineering leadership role, with proven progression of leadership roles from engineer to manager
• Strong background in process optimization, Lean Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to drive data-driven decisions.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and the capacity to motivate and inspire international, cross-functional teams.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively at all levels of the organization.
• Project management experience and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• Adaptability to evolving technologies and a commitment to staying updated with industry trends.
• Lead or participate in engineering strategy creating process
Experiences/Education - Desired
Desired Skills:
• Process simulation software and computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
• Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements related to manufacturing processes.
