Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

The functional requirements involved with the application on light-duty after-treatment components is becoming more complex with the advancement of engine and powertrain technologies to support ultra-low emissions compliance. Therefore, characterizing the product performance as well as integrating products into the application is much more essential in this business segment. The role of “Systems Design Engineer: Light Duty Automotive” is to design and develop experimental test plans to characterize gasoline and diesel substrate and filter product performance along with design, development and/or usage of modeling tools (primarily 0-D and 1-D) based on executed test programs from on-engine and surrogate test bench experiment data. The responsibilities include experimental test program execution, refining of existing modeling tools in the group, and developing new modeling tools to enable product performance prediction based on customer needs. Furthermore, the Systems Design Engineer will be responsible for personal participation and delivery to a highly interactive and integrated internal global technology team (NA, EU, AP) along with external promotion of key work through direct customer interactions along with technical conferences and industry networking. The typical performance aspects evaluated are the following: vehicle and test repeatability, gaseous emissions reduction performance, pressure drop, filtration performance, regeneration behavior and survivability and durability.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, execute and track testing closely (lab, engine, vehicle) to ensure proper execution of the tests and provide quick feedback (typically within 1-2 days) to steer testing in the right direction – ensure implementation of proper test methods
  • Raw data analysis, quality assessment, and interpretation of results
  • Verify experimental observations based on first principles and physical models
  • Link performance related aspects of substrate and filter to product characteristics/attributes and/or surrogate measures (Dp, FE, properties, geometry)
  • Design test and test approaches for model development, calibration and validation and provide input for the testing approach to the organization (Development, engineering, commercial)
  • Develop models and tools to describe the performance of our products (emissions aftertreatment components like substrates and filters)
  • Develop tools and strategies to easily implement our products in the application of our customers
  • Use existing in-house software and commercially available software like Axisuite for product performance evaluation (emissions, pressure drop, filtration, ash storage, ash transport, regeneration, durability)
  • Summarize results in reports and presentation and disseminate information within organization and to customers
  • Deploy tools within the SE group globally once fully validated


Location / Travel Requirements

Position is desired to locate in the Detroit Metro area. Travel would mostly be with-in the Detroit area for OEM and supply chain support. Up to 6 months of on-location training in Corning, NY area during first year of employment. 10-20% domestic & international travel after first 6 months.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours


Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree (minimum) in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in gasoline or diesel engine after-treatment design & testing desired


Required Skills

  • Good understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals (fluid flow/hydrodynamics, heat transfer, kinetics, reactions)
  • Experience with developing models for temperature, emissions, filtration and pressure drop of automotive emissions control components (eg: substrates and particulate filters)
  • Good understanding of basics of emission control components (eg: TWC, DOC, GPF/DPF, SCR)
  • Familiarity and experience with commercially available modeling software like Axisuite is highly preferred
  • Rigor in experimental planning and execution as well as data analysis
  • Ability to quickly understand complex testing systems (engines, dynos, emissions benches)
  • Development and assessment of experimental procedures/plans
  • Good computer skills (esp. MS office) including the use of advanced analysis tools (e.g. Matlab), data processing capability (w/ Excel & Matlab) and documentation/reporting of results in front of an audience


Desired Skills

  • Essential understanding of internal combustion engines, emissions and after treatment, including the test methods
  • Industry experience and contacts in the area of model development for temperature, pressure drop, emissions, filtration, etc. of aftertreatment components
  • Familiarity with national and international emissions regulations and certification test protocols
  • Project management skills
  • Technical leadership skills
