Purpose of Position:

Lead an operations department to achieve safety, quality, cost and productivity performance. Lead salary and hourly employees to achieve and exceed targets! Work within and across the department for continuous cold end finishing and packaging operations; plant-level operational improvement projects, and plant-level continuous improvement efforts. The Cold End department has overall responsibility to prioritize production schedules based on product introduction, equipment efficiency, and materials supply. Receives assignments in the form of objectives and establishes goals to meet objectives. Provides mentorship to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with their prioritization. Frequently interacts with supervisors, operators, and functional peer group supervisors. May interact with senior management.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Meet all department production objectives relative to safety, quality, cost and capacity
  • Champion safety performance, implement all safety regulations!
  • Lead department production
  • Ensure teams have clear ownership of performance issues between production and engineering
  • Lead equipment selects and utilization to meet and exceed budget
  • Establish effective new processes and technologies to manufacturing
  • Ensure department production capacity meets demand both current and future
  • Handle department staffing and overtime levels
  • Develop team/individual skill levels in support of continuous improvement and personnel growth
  • Utilize employee performance metrics for communication and accountability to achieve results
  • Define run and support continuous improvement of existing manufacturing processes
  • Resolve issues and development team performance – work with department union representation to address and resolve issues

Education & Experience:

  • BS in Engineering, required

  • 3-5 demonstrated experience in Manufacturing, required
  • 4 Years of Supervisory experience, desired

Required Skills:

  • Champion process control and change management efforts to adapt to upstream and downstream operations changes, drive improvement to process capability and mitigate process variation.
  • Schedule resources and prioritize activities to assure timely troubleshooting and escalation of issues as necessary. Promote line/alley ownership through engineering and operations to deliver product to quality standards, yield targets and pack expectations. Schedule compliance includes changeovers, upgrades, experiments, new product runs, training, and maintenance activities.
  • Provide daily direction to operations and maintenance employees in line with established procedures and policies.
  • Communicate and report performance metrics to production teams and plant staff. Ensure targets and delivery requirements are met on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Engage with plant teams and functional groups responsible for identifying and implementing process improvements and cost reduction projects.
  • Build and maintain close relationships with other departments to share and receive feedback on upstream and downstream operations (e.g. anticipated downtime) and, in turn, optimize performance of production operations.
  • Ensure the protection of Corning’s Intellectual Property (IP).
  • Establish and define expectations for technical and operational proficiencies within the batch, abatement and melting department.
  • Proven track record of safety leadership
  • Proven track record of optimally leading and empowering production teams
  • Sound decision making skills – ability to effectively analyze data from multiple sources and set direction
  • Ability to handle/prioritize multiple tasks as needed
  • Communicate frequently and effectively to different audiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to interface optimally with all levels in the organization
  • Good time management and organization skills
  • Experience working with production teams in a union environment

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in hot glass manufacturing (forming and finishing operations)
  • Green Belt and Lean principles understanding
  • Demonstration of communications upward and outward with collaborative approaches
  • Travel Requirements: < 5%
  • Hours of Work: Support 24 x 7 operation and occasional weekend team rotation
