Scope of Position:

In this role, you will lead an operations department to achieve safety, quality, cost and productivity performance. You will manage salary and hourly employees to achieve and exceed targets. Within the Hot End operations, you will lead batch, pollution abatement, melting and forming for continuous operations; plant-level operational improvement projects, and plant-level continuous improvement efforts. The Hot End department has overall responsibility for the continuous supply of high quality glass to Cold End operations.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Meet all department production objectives relative to safety, quality, cost and capacity.
  • Champion safety performance, enforce all safety regulations.
  • Lead department production.
  • Ensure teams have clear ownership of performance issues between production and engineering.
  • Handle equipment selects and utilization to meet and exceed budget.
  • Establish effective new processes and technologies to manufacturing.
  • Ensure department production capacity meets demand both current and future
  • Handle department staffing and overtime levels.
  • Develop team/individual skill levels in support of continuous improvement and personnel growth.
  • Utilize employee performance metrics for communication and accountability to achieve results.
  • Define, lead and support continuous improvement of existing manufacturing processes.
  • Resolve conflict and development team performance – work with department union representation to address and resolve issues.
  • Engage with plant teams and functional groups responsible for identifying and implementing process improvements and cost reduction projects.
  • Build and maintain close relationships with other departments to share and receive feedback on upstream and downstream operations (e.g. anticipated downtime) and, in turn, optimize performance of production operations.
  • Ensure the protection of Corning’s Intellectual Property (IP).
  • Establish and define expectations for technical and operational competencies within the batch, abatement and melting department.
  • Schedule resources and prioritize activities to assure efficient batch, abatement, and melting performance to support continuous production operations. Schedule compliance includes changeovers, upgrades, experiments, new product runs, training, and maintenance activities.
  • Provide daily direction to operations and maintenance employees in line with established procedures and policies.
  • Ensure targets and delivery requirements are met on a daily and weekly basis.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Less than 5%.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
  • Additional time as required through Weekend Team Rotation and or 24 x 7 support.

 

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience supporting a 24/7 manufacturing facility.
  • Prefer minimum 3+ years prior supervisory experience leading teams.

 

Required Skills:

  • Shown ability to effectively lead and motivate production teams.
  • Ability champion process control and change management efforts to adapt to upstream and downstream operations changes, drive improvement to process capability and mitigate resultant process variation in own department.
  • Ability communicate and report performance metrics to production teams and plant staff.
  • Demonstrated safety leadership.
  • Focus and prior training in continuous improvement.

 

Desired Experience / Qualifications / Skills:

  • Experience in hot glass manufacturing (batching, mixing, melting and forming operations).
  • Experience working with production teams in a union environment.
  • Green Belt and Lean principles understanding.
  • Demonstration of communications upward and outward with collaborative approaches.
  • MEE training a plus.

 

Soft Skills:

  • Sound decision-making skills and ability to effectively analyze data from multiple sources and set direction.
  • Ability to handle/prioritize multiple tasks as necessary.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively to different audiences.
  • Strong people skills, able to interface effectively with all levels in the organization.
  • Good time management and organization skills.
