Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

The scope of this position is to fulfil a full time electrician role for qualified candidates who have a two year degree equivalent to “Industrial Systems Technology” or “Electrical Systems Technology” and succesffuly complete a two year on-the-job (OJT - 4000 hrs) training program and ceritification. During OJT period works under the direction of various Maintenace Associates to complete Bluebook tasks and learn to construct, install, service, and repair a complex variety of recording, regulating and integrated electronic control instruments and plant and production electrical equipment. Works from, and lays out according to wiring diagrams, blueprints, written and/or verbal instructions. Diagnoses and corrects any and all problems involving interrelated instruments, electrical and electronic systems.

This work includes such duties as:

  • Identifies cause of equipment, controls, instruments or service failure and makes adjustments, alters, repairs or replaces equipment or component parts.
  • Builds, lays out and installs instruments, wiring panels and circuits on OWG lathes, draw, consolidation and pollution abatement control system, with or without wiring diagrams or layout. Installs, maintains, repairs and replaces a complex variety of control systems such as servo loop, pyrometer, programmable controllers, induction furnace and lasers; electrical equipment, wiring systems, and electronic instruments such as, IDM, proportional heater controls, power supply, digital counter and read out, auto call, PA and fire alarm system, high voltage power supply, air compressor, exhaust fans, motors, starter, 110, 220, 440, 4160 volt circuits, conduit, UPS systems, receptacles, relays, heat trace, rectifiers, connectors, transformers, oscilloscope and various electrical components.
  • Carries out switch gear maintenance and repair work.
  • Switches to generator power in event of extended power outages.
  • Charges, changes and services batteries.
  • Adapts various types of jigs and fixture for required additional control or operations or for newly designed equipment or products.
  • Calibrates and adjusts instruments and electronic devices against specified standards.
  • Services all recording instruments and time clocks.
  • Has a wide knowledge of mechanical operations of equipment to solve interrelated problems involving mechanical/electrical operations.
  • Notifies supervisor of repairs which should be done by instrument or control manufacturers.
  • Maintains necessary instrument, electronic devices, parts and supply records. Performs such work as the following on energized lines, circuits, equipment and connections carrying 440 volts or less; moves and removes wiring in safety switch motor starters, removes and replaces fuses, moves and installs breakers in breaker panels, and makes hot cutovers.
  • Maintains good housekeeping conditions at work stations and observes safety regulations and practices.
  • Performs required maintenance on plant 4160 volt switch gear such as:
    • A. Operates switch gear circuit breakers to energize and de-energize circuits.
    • B. Removes circuit breakers from voltage source to perform annual PM's. NOTE: None of the 4160 volt maintenance is performed on energized circuits where the I/E is exposed to direct contact with unprotected conductors.


  • Two year degree equivalent to “Industrial Systems Technology” or “Electrical Systems Technology”

General Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE).
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
  • Some weight and lift resrtictions may apply.
  • May use fork lift truck in lifting heavy electrical items for installation.
  • After the successful completion of 4000 hours of OJT, employee will transistion to Job Title: Instrument Electrician
