Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
- Leads an optical fiber testing team at the Center for Fiber-Optic Testing.
- Applies scientific, mathematical, and statistical techniques in the determination of performance attributes for optical fiber products, processes and measurements.
- Develops a complete understanding of measurement devices, procedures and standards.
- Provides engineering support and consultation on specific projects, such as the assembly, debug, testing, and purchasing of new measurement systems and test equipment.
- Identifies and implements improvements to existing measurement systems as required.
- Works with customers, Applications Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and scientists on matters of optical, physical, and reliability measurements and influences optical fiber product development.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Plans and arranges the labor, schedules, and equipment required for testing and evaluating standard and special devices.
- Collaborates with members of immediate team as well as teams within research and other development groups.
- Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to figure out appropriate action.
- Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors.
- Communicates progress and needs to immediate team and other partners.
- Balances hands-on work-related activities with technical leadership while providing guidance to other team members.
Education and Experience:
- B.S in Engineering, Engineering Physics, Material Science, Physics, or Chemistry.
Required Skills:
- Providing technical and organizational leadership to a small team.
- Ability to guide the professional developmental of direct reports.
- Ability to design and carry out experiments independently.
- Knowledgeable in analyzing data, drawing logical conclusions and driving next steps.
- Technical curiosity.
Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)
- Experience in metrology.
- Optical fiber application understanding.
- Optical fiber manufacturing experience.
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal <10%.
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
- Mon-Fri 8a-5p / 40 hrs per week.
Location:
This position will be located in Corning, NY until at least Q1 2026, at which time it will be permanently relocated to Wilmington, NC.

- Candidates local to Wilmington, NC will be required to travel frequently or be temporarily based in Corning, NY until the move in 2026.

The range for this position is $131,667.00 - $181,043.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
