Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The Project Manager, Fiber Capital Programs is responsible for leading large-scale capital projects that expand the capacity and capability of Corning Optical Communications manufacturing facilities globally. This role provides project leadership across all phases of equipment deployment, installation, commissioning, and startup, partnering with Technology Development and cross-functional teams to deliver manufacturing systems safely, effectively, and in alignment with business objectives. Using Corning’s Capital Management System, the role ensures successful project scope development, funding approval, execution, and handover for complex, multi-disciplined projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure projects are executed safely and in full compliance with Corning safety requirements, including reviewing worksites and addressing any deficiencies.
- Lead and manage project teams of 5–10 engineers and technicians, along with matrixed internal and external resources.
- Partner with OFC leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to define project objectives and align on business needs.
- Lead the use of the Capricorn process to define project scope, develop funding requests, and execute capital projects effectively.
- Build and organize project teams using the appropriate mix of internal expertise and external support.
- Manage stakeholder communication, including updates to project stakeholders, steering teams, and governance teams.
- Own project deliverables, schedules, budgets, risk identification, and issue resolution, while traveling to project sites as needed during definition and execution phases.
Education and Experience- Required:
- BS or MS in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial or Chemical Engineering OR combination of a technical degree (design, electrical, mechanical, chemical, industrial)
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in leadership and/or management roles for capital manufacturing equipment projects or similar manufacturing engineering leadership experience
- Experience with equipment, construction and manufacturing costs
- Experience managing project budgets and developing project business cases
- Experience guiding teams toward consensus and informed decision-making
Travel Requirements:
- Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase. During the deployment phase of the project, travel may be full-time.
- Planning, Development and/or Deployment phases typically range from 3-9 months but can extend to 1+ years.
- Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina (Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Newton, and Wilmington) and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.
Desired Skills:
- Experience in Optical Fiber manufacturing – including development, engineering, or operations
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
- Strong process discipline for managing project scope, schedule, and budget, including formal scope change control
- Experience working with project teams in design and troubleshooting activities
- Experience managing matrixed teams of 10+ members
- Works well with other organizations (Operations, Engineering, IT, Quality, Finance and others) to fully understand project impacts and deliverables
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with team members, stakeholders, and division leadership, including multi-national diverse teams

The range for this position is $116,625.00 - $160,360.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
