Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

 

Scope of Position:

Supports the design and implementation of controls-based solutions for novel future processing equipment, specifically Fibermaking and Fiber Processing equipment within the Optical Fiber and Cable Division. This position is also responsible for troubleshooting electrical and controls systems, writing and maintaining ownership of PLC code, and supporting automation projects. These projects and solutions will enable efficiency and yield improvements, convey ware between processing steps, and/or measure and characterize fiber manufactured in upstream process steps.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Write and troubleshoot PLC code to support manufacturing and future automated equipment and processes – including Fanuc robots, Allen Bradley, Rockwell Compact/ControlLogix, and other PLC systems.
  • Integrate field devices for flow control, material handling and metering, motion control, temperature control, and associated safety systems based the system design package enabling a fully-functional equipment platform.
  • Work closely with controls engineers and project managers to implement control sequence logic (both time-based and event-based), fail-safe states, and process/equipment recovery sequences.
  • Accurately estimate timeframe to complete assigned project work once scope of work is adequately defined and deliver to the timeline with proactive communication regarding any changes/delays.
  • Participate in engineering project teams that are responsible to deliver robust, cost effective automation and process machine systems within Optical Fiber Manufacturing.
  • Work within project teams to support solving difficult automation problems, delivering solutions within manufacturing, and development of fundamental understanding of technical requirements critical to system success.
  • Drive the deployment of defined control architectures, control system standards, and system integration that will satisfy project and manufacturing requirements.
  • Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to enable project deliverables.
  • Actively participate in project fabrication, off-line integration and testing, drawings and documentation, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel, and technology transfer.

 

Travel Requirements:  ~5% in North America

 

Required Education:

  • Two-Year Degree – preferably in Controls, Electrical Systems, Mechatronics, Automation, or equivalent.

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 0 - 2+ years manufacturing/controls experience

 

Required Skills:

  • Ladder logic PLC programming, specifically using RSLogix5000 and either CompactLogix or ControlLogix PLCs.
  • Experience integrating field devices for flow control, material handling and metering, motion control, temperature control, and associated safety systems into an overall controls package enabling a fully-functional equipment platform.
  • Experience with PID control loop tuning and techniques.
  • Experience working closely with IT & process engineers to implement control sequence logic (both time-based and event-based), fail-safe states and process / equipment recovery sequences.
  • Experience with graphical user interface and human machine interface.
  • Experience working within engineering project teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to support the development and delivery of fully integrated machine and motion control, automation, and process machine systems and solutions within a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiar with state of the art technologies in the following areas: control systems integration, controls architectures, PLC’s, motion control systems, electro-mechanical drive systems, robotics, part sensing, vision, risk assessment, and safety systems.
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, customer focused, with a high commitment level.
  • Experienced in the checkout and verification of electrical control panels.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience preferred with RSLogix5000, Rockwell Automation, Fanuc Robotics, Safety PLCs, Beckhoff TwinCAT and TwinSAFE.
  • Robot programming experience using a pendant
  • Experience developing architecture and writing PLC software from scratch
  • Manufacturing experience and ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Computer vision system experience, specifically Cognex vision and barcode readers.
  • Sound knowledge of the rules and regulation relating to implementation and best practices in electrical system design and implementation:

    o National Electric Code

    o NFPA 79 Specification

    o NFPA 70e Specification

    o ANSI and IEC electrical symbols

    o Grounding and shielding of electrical systems

  • Able to work with external machine builders and system integrators for build, and integration of later stages of system implementation.
