Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position: Development Technician in Research and Development organization to support the design, build, debug and industrialization of advanced manufacturing technology.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work with engineers to design, develop and build manufacturing equipment systems.
  • May design and develop new equipment components or systems.
  • May operate measurement devices and collect data to support product or process understanding.
  • Create & update documents such as machine specs, drawings, Standard Operating Procedures. • Train new hires and others on how to run a process or equipment.
  • Participate in developing a new process or machine to improve the current process.
  • Provide inputs to project plans for resource requirements, schedule, and budget.
  • Work with equipment suppliers to resolve equipment build questions and issues.
  • Serve as technical expert in specialty area.
  • Lead mechanical and electrical trades’ resources to complete installation of equipment
  • Coordinates safe work practices (tool box talks, SWMS, etc.)
  • Support troubleshooting of prototype equipment systems

 

Travel Requirements: • 10% or less

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • 40 hours/week
  • Standard work hours are M-F 8:00-5:00, however, overtime or shifted work hours is not uncommon and is indeed expected at times.
  • The amount and duration will vary as a function of the job position, particular project, and point in the project life cycle.

 

Required Education:

  • Associates Degree in technical field or strong Math/Science background and experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Other technician and/or operator roles that lead to a better understanding of the equipment & processes.
  • Reads fabrication drawings and electrical schematics.

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • At least five years experiences in a manufacturing environment a mechanical or electrical tech to support process equipment in an engineering support or maintenance role

 

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply academic and experiential knowledge to solve problems independently
  • Has strong approach to problem solving and troubleshooting
  • CAD skills including modeling, redlining and fabrication drawings (Inventor/AutoCAD)
  • Strong safety awareness
