Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
Help design, develop, and implement our plant digital and automation strategy potentially across multiple manufacturing plants. This position will lead or play a significant role delivering transformative cost reduction across the plant while improving quality and process capability. An ideal candidate will be capable of learning and implementing the latest vision, digital and automation technology and concepts and work with the operation, supply chain, and finance organization to deploy projects in manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and implement solutions for manufacturing which leverage latest digital technologies including data analytics and programming technologies.
- Evaluate existing control strategies and propose enhancements. Optimize or retrofit existing processes through modern control strategies such as optimal control, robust control, adaptive control, or model predictive control.
- Work closely with manufacturing to define appropriate controls hardware platforms/systems for implementing process control solutions.
- Develop and apply process controls skills to implement solutions in PLC/DCS/BPS (C-based controls) environments.
- Develop in-depth knowledge of existing processes to identify process control optimization opportunities and write proposals to initiate control projects.
- Work with process subject matter experts and apply process data analysis skills to gain fundamental understanding of manufacturing processes.
- Work closely with experienced professionals in multi-disciplined teams to design, develop and implement solutions for manufacturing processes.
- Utilize statistical analysis to design for process capability.
- Lead projects and work in a multi-disciplinary research, development, and engineering environment to identify opportunities for advanced controls.
- Leverage optimization techniques to improve process performance and efficiency.
- Facilitate the transfer of new process control technologies into manufacturing and provide training to manufacturing and engineering personnel.
- Document process control finding in technical reports. Generate intellectual property through invention disclosures and patent applications.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
- Minimum 1-5 years experience in manufacturing, with track record of automation project implementation.
Travel Requirements:
- Domestic travel up to 10%.
Work Schedule:
- Typically 40 hours/week but could be more depending on project requirements.
- Typically onsite to benefit from visibility to manufacturing environment with potential schedule-based flexibility
Required Skills:
- Programming experience in Python, C/C++ or C#
- Programming-related skills related to or involving web development, Microsoft IIS, Visual Studio, Git
- Analysis/Reporting experience with tools such as SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL, PowerBI
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong process-oriented mindset, be able to understand process dynamics and design appropriate control scheme.
- Strong verbal and written skills, able to prepare and present proposals effectively with and across multiple organizations.
- Functions well on projects and team initiatives as well as independent assignments. Results-oriented individual with a track record of meeting commitments and managing time well.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing environment; be a change agent to help others through change.
Additional Desired Skills:
- Experience in practical application of process control, including process data analysis, system modeling/identification, and control loop design/tuning
- Experience in statistical analysis methods
- Experience with ChatGPT and RAG implementations.
- Familiarity with a diverse array of process controls technologies such as model predictive, multi-variable, non-linear approaches, and classic PID control
- Machine vision experience including algorithm development, coding, and use of industrial cameras/vision.
- Six Sigma/DMAIC experience.

The range for this position is $82,468.00 - $113,394.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
