Scope of Position:

Corning’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) is focused on aspects of manufacturing equipment across the following areas: Development/design, Industrialization, Procurement, Deployment, Commissioning, and Startup.  This position is in the Fiber Capital Programs (FCP) department within the Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) and is focused on equipment deployment, commissioning, and startup.  The position is for a Project Leader position to be a member of a project team and provide project leadership in the upgrading, building, installation, commissioning, and startup of Corning Optical Communications manufacturing systems in the optical fiber and cable division.  This position will be responsible for leading Capital Projects to expand the capacity and capability of Global OFC Manufacturing Facilities.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • The Project Leader will be responsible for individual projects as well as sub projects for larger technology programs
  • The Project Leader will be responsible for overseeing all phases of a project.  This includes funding, design, purchasing, shipping and logistics, installation, and handover.
  • Projects will typically be in the Optical Fiber sites – either in North America or International
  • Project scope will typically be between $1M and $15M.
  • The Project team will consist of a mixed of multi-disciplined matrixed resources.
  • The Project Leader will partner with OFC Technology Development and Division Engineering teams to specify the technology to be delivered.
  • The Project Leader will utilize Corning’s Capital Management System for project scope development and project execution.
  • Reports to one of the AMT Fiber Capital Programs Department Heads
  • Specific responsibilities include:
    • Managing 3-10 matrixed project team members
    • Interacting with leadership and peers throughout OFC to determine project objectives.
    • Leading the use of the Capricorn process to fully define project scopes, develop funding requests, and execute projects.
    • Defining and Building project teams
    • Traveling to the project execution site as necessary during project definition phase; Deploying to the project site as applicable during the project execution phase.
    • Managing communication with all stakeholders, steering team, and project governance team
    • Managing project deliverables, schedule, and budgets to the approved project scope, as well as executing scope changes for approval.

Travel Requirements:

  • Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase. During the deployment phase of the project, travel may be full-time.
  • Planning, Development and/or Deployment phases typically range from 3-9 months but can extend to 1+ years.
  • Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina (Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Newton, and Wilmington) and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • 40hrs+ M-F, adjusted hours and weekends may be required based on where the project is in the project life cycle.
  • The position is overtime exempt.  Overtime is not uncommon and is indeed expected at times, however the amount and duration will vary as a function of the job position, particular project, and point in the project life cycle.

Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial or Chemical Engineering. 
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in leadership/management roles for capital manufacturing equipment projects or similar manufacturing engineering leadership experience.

Required Skills:

  • Technical proficiency to actively participate in the selection of technologies for a project and to guide the project team in design and troubleshooting activities.
  • Strong analytical skills including the understanding of equipment, construction, and manufacturing costs.
  • Strong financial skills to manage project budgets and develop project business cases.
  • Strong verbal & written communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with team members, stakeholders, and division leadership, including multi-national diverse teams.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and adapt quickly to changing requirements.
  • Willing to deploy to project sites.

Desired Skills:

  • Optical Fiber manufacturing experience – can be in development, engineering, or operations.
  • Manufacturing Equipment design and development experience
  • Software experience preferred: AutoCAD®, Inventor, Windows, MS Office suite including Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and Project.

The range for this position is  $94,958.00   -  $130,568.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
