Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

The internship will consist of fundamental equipment and process improvements to support Optical Fiber Manufacturing through involvement on a few key projects and production support activities in a specific process area. Objectives for the production support and projects will be clearly laid out, and the work will be in a team environment of engineers, technicians, and operators.



  • Work with support groups and production teams to coordinate and direct equipment installations, start-up, repair, troubleshooting, and process changes.
  • Support Preventive Maintenance activities.
  • Provide first, second, and third level troubleshooting of equipment/process issues.
  • Provide technical training for associates.
  • Recommend improvements to process/equipment and drive equipment robustness.
  • Leverage sound technical fundamentals to identify chronic issues and recommend corrective actions
  • Work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment to drive equipment/process standardization and continuous improvements

Hours of work / work schedule / flex-time:

  • Basic work hours are 30 to 40hrs/week;
  • 8am-5pm with flexibility based upon school schedule;
  • Additional hours/weekends when needed to meet project objectives


Travel Requirements: Minimal


Education and Experience:

  • Must be a Cape Fear Community College student in one of the following four programs:
    • Mechatronics Eng. (1a)
    • Electronics Eng. (1b)
    • Electrical Systems (3)
    • Mechanical Eng. (4)
