Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

As the Forming Capabilities Supervisor you will establish, organize and manage Engineering Capabilities and Standards for Forming Technology for Corning Optical Fiber (OFC). You will also coordinate engineering resources and projects to meet business objectives plus lead and execute projects related to cost reduction, capacity and capability improvements. This position allows you to work with global team members and take on difficult process, technical and engineering related issues. You will be responsible for driving fundamental process understanding and lowest cost producer objectives. Our team supports the development and execution of plans to evaluate new technology or improvements in existing technology resulting in a superior product in terms of quality and/or cost.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Lead Forming group engineering personnel and coach engineering reports as required
  • Lead and/or provide support for projects involving cost reduction, process optimization, and new products/processes
  • Identify chronic issues and recommend corrective actions for process/equipment using sound engineering principles
  • Identify/lead change and provide engineering input for our global manufacturing operations
  • Provide engineering expertise for fundamental understanding of manufacturing issues
  • Provide necessary project leadership and management for reporting and for projects
  • Communicate effectively to broad audiences including executive management


Travel Requirements: ~15-20% domestic travel, primarily within NC. Some international travel may be required


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours per week. Typically M-F but may require weekends depending on travel schedules or job assignment


Required Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical, Materials or Ceramic, Chemical or Electrical Engineering. MS preferred.
  • 4+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment along with supervisory roles


Required Skills:

  • Project Management experience and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work on an independent basis
  • Experience in participating and leading projects that have involved fluid flow/heat transfer or material sciences.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently supervise, motivate and guide personnel
  • Strong technical fundamentals with process engineering skills
  • Strong data analysis and statistical skills; proficient with Microsoft Excel and Access
  • Ability to learn new technology and processes quickly
  • Creative/innovative problem solving
  • Strong communication and presentation skills


Desired Skills:

  • Six Sigma Greenbelt certification
  • Leader of multiple successfully completed projects
  • Supervisory experience and working with and leading multi-national/cultural teams
  • Deep knowledge of manufacturing cost accounting
  • Experience with statistical packages such as Minitab
