Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Process engineer will provide division-level engineering for optical fiber manufacturing.  This will include advancing our capabilities in the preform manufacturing process.  Specifically, project assignments will include cost reduction, process and raw material optimization, engineered safety improvements, standards and governance among sites, and ensuring manufacturing readiness for new processes. 

Position is in the Division Engineering organization within Corning Optical Fiber and Cable (OFC).  Locations available:  Wilmington, NC or Concord, NC.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Use fundamental engineering concepts to drive capability advancements in glassmaking processes.
  • Lead cost reduction and process improvement projects that have division-wide implication.
  • Work between technology and plant manufacturing organizations to ensure smooth deployment of new technologies, products, and processes by identifying and and/or leading implementation of required capabilities.
  • Collaborate with global manufacturing sites to coordinate and solve glassmaking-related issues and concerns.
  • Lead or participate in site-to-site standards and governance effort.  This includes identifying, auditing, and driving compliance to governed process parameters across sites.
  • Travel as required to complete job assignments.  Depending on business conditions, this could include North America and/or international locations.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • 15-20% (+/-) in North America.  
  • Some international travel may be required.

 

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Typically 40+ hours per week.
  • Typically M-F but may require weekends depending on travel schedules or job assignment.

 

Required Education:

B.S. or M.S. in Engineering (Ceramics, Chemical, Physics, Electronic/Electric, Mechanical or Materials)

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 0 -  3 years’ experiences in process engineering, glass or material engineering is preferred.

 

Required Skills:

  • Strong data analysis and statistical skills.  Experience with statistical packages such as Minitab and JMP.   
  • Strong computer skills, including ability to analyze data using Excel and Access.
  • Strong mastery of fundamental engineering concepts with demonstrated ability to apply to manufacturing problems.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Able to execute assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Able to collaborate with varied levels and functions within the organization, including manufacturing, technology, R&D, operations, procurement, IT, and supply chain.
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, and customer focused, with a high commitment level.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of glass or ceramic manufacturing.
  • Prior experience moving a new product or process from development into manufacturing.
  • Statistical analysis experience.
  • Six Sigma DMAIC experience.
