Job Description
Lays out, fabricates, and inspects complex machine shop work, setting up and operating all tool room and machine shop equipment, such as milling machines, computer numeric control (CNC) mills, drill presses, lathes and grinding equipment. Uses a wide variety of precision hand tools; Works to close tolerances to create parts using both prints & written specifications or can use verbal instructions to create own design; makes and assembles a wide variety of intricate machine shop products, especially those involving widely dissimilar, moving and interchangeable parts for plant equipment and production machines.
Activities
Overall work includes such duties as:
• Lays out a wide variety of complex machine shop work involving fittings and assembling of dissimilar, moving and interchangeable parts.
• Determines method of sequence of machine and hand operations, selecting appropriate speeds, feeds, coolants, in accordance with nature of operation and type of material used.
• Sets up machine tools, grinds cutting and forming tools, and mounts tools in machine.
Operates machine tools by performing tasks such as the following:
• Position work piece in chuck vise, jigs or other holding device which may have to be created based on job requirements and aligns or trues part using indicators as necessary.
• Starts machine into operation and positions cutting tool by turning hand wheels, manipulating levers, etc. Engages automatic feeds to turn, face drill, bore, shape, etc., to required dimensions and disengages feed when proper dimensions are reached.
• Assumes the quality of items produced at various stages of the manufacturing process through visual inspection. Measures work periodically using vernier, micrometer, or spring calipers to assure conformance to specifications stipulated by print or required by the nature of the next operation.
• Determines appropriate hand and bench tools and air powered equipment, reamers, files, taps and dies to produce details not practical by machine.
• Makes tools, cutters, and gauges according to print specifications, as required by shaping, plating, and grinding for proper clearance and fit.
• Identifies the need to repair and at times may be required to modify or rebuild existing machines on a case-by-case basis.
• Directs the work of lesser skilled employees as necessary.
• Provides quotes by estimating time and material cost for engineering; Works directly with outside vendors to order parts, anodize ware etc.; Orders tools, material fixtures and orders and manages material inventory; Manages the workflow of orders coming into the shop and determines how to divide work among each other to best support with internal plant customers.
Experience Required
4 years apprenticeship and 2 years of non-production experience or 8 years of non-production experience.
The starting pay for this position is $37.16 USD hourly rate. Compensation and benefits available for this position are dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
