Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

The purpose of this position: 

  • To perform a very wide variety of maintenance tasks including but not limited to mechanical and electrical maintenance work such as: installation, fabrication, assembly, set-up, diagnosis.

 

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Preventive/predictive, troubleshooting maintenance work on plant equipment, facilities, and services requiring the use of hand and maintenance tools and skills.
  • Works from blueprints, sketches, written and verbal instructions.
  • Operates a wide variety of equipment such as: various saws, benders, breaks, pipe threaders, drills, gauges, meters, feelers, voltmeters, wire strippers, micrometers, industrial fork trucks, hand trucks, machine tools, welding equipment, carts, ladders, lifts, etc.
  • Performs tasks such as removing and reinstalling equipment, bearing replacements, equipment rebuilds, pipe bending and installation, etc.
  • Provide cross training for other skilled trades.
  • May be a member of a work group or team that utilizes some business skills such as: writing and entering work orders, material purchasing, project coordination, quotes and estimates, use of computer in performance of duties, etc.

 

Requirements:

  • This position has a skill/certification module.
  • The specific skill requirements for each module appear in the certification document
  • Module 1 includes such duties as: Works independently, coordinates PMs, rebuilds, shutdowns and other employees as required; displays innovativeness when dealing with complex problems; trains others in maintenance techniques designed for sensitive processes.
  • Works as member of a team; writes process documentation; prepares maintenance projects and layouts, inter-faces with customers, vendors and suppliers; responsible for the quality of works, timeliness, work methods, practices. (As additional modules are defined, the description will be updates for evaluation purposes.)
  • Must be willing to work rotating shift schedule
  • The successful candidate must pass a "Fit for Duty" exam designed for the Mechanic Job Description.  

 

Education/Experience: 

  • High School or GED
  • Must have equivalent to a 2-year Mechanical associate degree and at least 8,000 on the job hours or > than 4 years’ experience.

The starting pay for this position is ​$34.51 hourly rate.  Compensation and benefits available for this position are dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
