Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

The scope of this position is to prepare for a full time mechanic role for qualified candidates who have a two year degree equivalent to “Industrial Systems Technology” and successfully complete a two year on-the-job (OJT - 4000 hrs.) training program and certification. During OJT period the successful candidate works under the direction of various Maintenance Associates to complete Bluebook tasks and learn to perform maintenance, installation, construction, remodeling, major overhauls and repairs to all types of plant facilities, services, maintenance pollution abatement and production machinery and equipment requiring the use of trades and mechanics tools such as: lathe, drill press, milling machine, grinder, welder, table saw, pipe threader, cutting torch, squaring shear, bending brake, fork lift truck, hand tools, etc.

For the duration of the apprentice the vocational apprentice will learn to:

  • Work from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions to complete assignments, and observe accepted trade practices and tolerances.
  • Diagnose machine malfunctions, disassemble, repair and assemble all types of equipment, such as, air compressors, vacuum pumps, heat pump and chiller, machine shop tools, OWG lathes, draws, consolidation furnaces, PA equipment and other stationary plant facilities and production equipment.
  • Perform a variety of the most complicated work in various trades fields with tasks typical of the following:
    • aligns interrelated parts to close tolerance on such equipment as lathes, draws, consolidation furnaces and PA equipment;
    • fabricates, constructs and installs OWG manufacturing equipment such as lathes, draws, consolidation furnaces, and PA equipment;
    • constructs offices and engineering labs, from metal or wood partitions, T-bar framed dropped ceilings, and tiled floors, and installs services, such as: air conditioning, heating, compressed air and vacuum piping;
    • machine simple parts, such as: bushing, shafts, brackets, etc.
  • Perform all preventive maintenance duties and maintains necessary preventive maintenance records.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in work area while at all times observing safety regulations and practices.

General Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE).
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
  • Must be able to pass mechanical aptitude test

  • Some weight and lift restrictions may apply. After the successful completion of 4000 hours of OJT, employee will transition to Job Title: Mechanic Skilled Trades
