Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

**Multiple Mechanical Development Engineer positions are available in Fiber Technology. This requisition is for openings within the AMT Development and HSDC Development departments. Please specify your preferred department**

 

The role of a Mechanical Equipment Design and Development Engineer involves leading or participating in multidisciplinary teams for the design and development of equipment for optical fiber manufacturing processes and products. The engineer will be responsible for the design, development, enhancement and industrialization of Optical Fiber manufacturing platforms. This includes transforming experimental solutions and understanding into engineering requirements, leading to the creation of process and equipment designs that meet performance criteria. The successful candidate will primarily work within a technology development team, focusing on improving various aspects such as manufacturing yields, process rate, machine utilization, product quality, new product quality, environmental compliance, raw material yield, and energy usage.

 

Primary Responsibilities: 

 

  • Use established processes to identify concepts for manufacturing equipment, design, build and test selected concepts as an individual and in teams, and utilize risk management tools to ensure on-time delivery. 
  • Designing and executing equipment validation test in a manufacturing plant; analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations
  • Collaborating with other equipment/machine design experts within and outside of OFC development organization
  • Securing funding via appropriation requests and expense budgeting processes to support equipment design and development
  • Communicating and documenting results and equipment designs

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • The position is overtime exempt.  Overtime is not uncommon and is indeed expected at times, however the amount and duration will vary as a function of the job position, particular project, and point in the project life cycle.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar technical field
  • Working knowledge of physical phenomena (static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, optics, etc.) with a strong background in machine design or machine systems integration
  • The ability to work with other engineering disciplines (Electrical/Controls, Chemical/Materials) to create prototype and industrial process equipment design solutions
  • Sound understanding of material properties and capabilities for use in machine design
  • Knowledge/experience in materials processing equipment for manufacturing
  • Ability to design and carry out experiments in lab and manufacturing environments

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters Degree
  • Experience with optical fiber process development or manufacturing
  • 3-D CAD  (AutoDesk Inventor) experience
  • Working knowledge of Machine Controls and safety systems
  • Experience with DMAIC and MEE methodologies for problem solving
  • Experience with data processing software (e.g. Jump, Python, PowerBI)  and/or Modeling simulation software (e.g. Aspen, Matlab, Fluent).

 

This requisition is for B and C band opportunities in Fiber Technology within AMT Development and HSDC Development departments. Selected internal candidates will be offered at the band that aligns with their skills and experience.

The range for this position is $86,000.00 - $132,550.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
