Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Purpose of the Position:

Development Engineer responsible for working within teams to develop new optical fiber manufacturing processes and/or process conditions for improved product attributes or reduced cost of optical fiber.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Use established processes and apply fundamentals of process engineering and chemistry/material to identify concepts for manufacturing processes, define manufacturing equipment requirements, and guide or lead associated development from feasibility thru proof-of-capability for optical fiber manufacturing.
  • Engage with corporate R&D to guide processes development and problem solving for early stage process and associated equipment development
  • Develop analytical models and/or guide corporate modeling resources to inform process development, equipment design, or product performance
  • Collaborate with equipment design, processing equipment deployment, and manufacturing receivers during later stages of technology development

Projects involved with:

  • Horizon IV, Phantom, and potentially Milano, Swift

Education & Experience:

  • We require an advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Process Engineering, or similar, M.S. (or PhD) with 5-10 years experience preferred
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of chemistry, chemical reaction kinetics, and thermodynamics, as well as physical phenomena (heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, rheological behaviors, etc.), with a strong background in relating material properties to process conditions and product attributes
  • Knowledge/experience in materials processing for polymers coatings, glass, or ceramics
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Design and carry out experiments in lab and manufacturing environments

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge / experience with optical fiber process development or manufacturing
  • Knowledge of fiber optics and materials based glassmaking.
  • Working knowledge/use of MS Access and JMP or similar statistical package.
  • Mathematical/numerical model development and/or model-based programming skills (experience or knowledge of Fluent, Polyflow, Ansys a benefit)
  • Proficient in DMAIC and MEE methodologies for problem solving

Soft Skills:

  • Strong independent work ethic
  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational skill
  • Work interactively with, or run multi-functional teams with ties to Research and Early Stage Development and Manufacturing.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
