Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Engineering Scope of Position:

Lead the Projects Group while maintaining and executing a project portfolio that aligns with the Division Engineering Strategy. Deployment may occur at any of our worldwide locations, primarily in the glassmaking or fibermaking areas. This position will require networking with division and plant leadership to ensure effective delivery of projects that contribute to the business plan.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain strategic project portfolio that aligns with the division engineering strategy for glassmaking and fiber making.
  • Coordinate development of scopes, business cases, appropriations requests, and execution plans for approved capital projects.
  • Manage project managers to ensure projects deliver as promised on time and on schedule.
  • Network with both division and plant-level leaders to ensure project portfolios align with business strategy.
  • Serve on the Extended Project Management Office staff and serve as Fiber Capabilities Engineering SME on division projects, business priorities, and capital management.
  • Maintain Planview project portfolio and forecasts for Fiber Capabilities Engineering.
  • Create and manage cross functional project teams.
  • Remove project execution obstacles by coordinating with functional support departments (internal and external) to obtain critical resources, information, and results.


Required Education and Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical/Controls, Materials, or equivalent)
  • 5-10 years in manufacturing setting. Engineering leadership and project management experience is a plus.


Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated project management and leadership skills.
  • Mastery of fundamental engineering concepts with demonstrated ability to apply to manufacturing problems.
  • Able to collaborate with varied levels and functions within the organization, including manufacturing, technology, R&D, operations, procurement, IT, and supply chain.
  • Possesses sound problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, and customer focused, with a high commitment level.
  • Strong computer skills, including ability to analyze data using Excel and Access.


Soft Skills:

  • Works well in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Works well with different functional areas (Technology, Engineering, Operations, IT, GSM, etc).
  • Thinks innovatively.
  • Acts and makes decisions in the best interest of team.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communications skills.


Hours of work:

  • Typically 40+ hours per week M-F
  • May require weekend or nighttime work depending on travel schedules or job assignment.


Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 25% domestic travel with some international travel required.
  • This role could occasionally require project assignments away from home location for extended duration.
