Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

To manage a product line from Core to Fiber Finishing, monitoring and improving its performance to meet or exceed the manufacturing budget and plan, while also leading manufacturing engineering projects and support teams for the purpose of reducing cost, increasing capacity and/or improving the product.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and improve product line in all aspects from the initial Core step through Fiber Finishing including; monitoring and improving the manufacturing process to maximize yields, identifying/eliminating process problems quickly and independently, and communicating critical needs for the product line based on business needs.
  • Support critical manufacturing equipment and processes responsible for optical properties and yield optimization as well as understand implications of changes to this equipment and how to maintain process control.
  • Become an active member of the product leadership team helping to determine the vision of the product on a one and five year time horizon.
  • Work with other team members and departments to ensure that product output at each process step meets or exceeds manufacturing budgets and plans. Be able to prioritize workstreams and make fundamental improvements in areas of concern.
  • Develop and maintain product performance tracking systems that can identify issues before resulting in upsets, find root causes of reoccurring issues, and aid in the transfer of responsibilities to MET and Production.
  • Receive and integrate new technologies or product profiles to improve process capability while ensuring proper processes are followed during transfer.
  • Develop continuous improvements to the manufacturing process that meets strategic business objectives.
  • Develop project portfolio to address identified gaps and continually improve product selects and output.
  • Lead medium to large scale cost reduction efforts and process changes to improve capability all while minimizing impact to the product line.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Learn & understand process & equipment functions in area of responsibility, ultimately becoming the SME for that product’s manufacturing process.
  • Provide leadership and troubleshooting support to critical process and equipment needed for the product line.
  • Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or quality. Adhere to all Corporate, Business Unit, and Site guidelines for same.
  • Develop and present the product manufacturing plan for a one year and five year time horizon.
  • Monitor performance and understand/improve/control all processes that contribute to performance of product line.
  • Perform in depth data and statistical analysis required to maintain/improve the process.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS in the following Engineering Disciplines: Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Materials or Ceramic Engineering.
  • 4-10 years of experience in Manufacturing or Development Environment.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Display a bias for action in situations of uncertainty, with proactive attention to issues and problems.
  • Use scientific method and engineering principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed process experiments.
  • Drive for root cause fundamental understanding and permanent solutions.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Less than 5%

 

Hours of work:

  • 8-10 hours/day; 40-50 hours/week.
  • This position requires off-hours coverage on nights and weekends on a rotating basis with co-workers.
