Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Scope of Position: The Development Technician in Product & Process Development is responsible for supporting new product and/or process development. This position is expected to support optical fiber draw and coating experimentation, downstream processing and characterization/measurements with additional responsibility to design, build, install, troubleshoot and maintain prototype equipment as needed.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work with project teams to support carrying out draw and coating experimentation including batch changes.
  • Operate fiber processing and measurement devices and collect data to support product or process understanding.
  • Work with engineers to design, build, install, troubleshoot and maintain prototype equipment systems.
  • Work with suppliers to acquire new equipment and resolve equipment questions and issues.
  • Participate in developing new process(es) or improve current process(es).
  • Create & update documents such as machine specifications, drawings, Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Train new hires and others on how to run a process or equipment.
  • Provide inputs to project plans for resource requirements, schedule, and budget.
  • Champion safe work practices.



Required Education and Experience:

  • Associates Degree in technical field or strong Math/Science background and experience
  • 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, supporting projects or equipment in an engineering support or maintenance role
  • Other technician and/or operator roles that lead to a better understanding of the equipment & processes

Hours of work:

  • Standard work hours are M-F 8:00-5:00
  • Overtime or shifted work hours is not uncommon
