Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Day to Day Tasks:

  • Develop understanding of process and equipment functions in area of responsibility
  • Communicate effectively in various settings with project managers, project support team, production receivers, production schedulers, plant leadership, operations, etc. in many different forms such as: start-up status updates, troubleshooting status/tasks, performance updates, etc.
  • Significant time spent on the floor working on equipment.
  • Lead initial setup, debug, and startup of equipment and automated systems including hands-on to the point of turnover to operations at both domestic and international manufacturing sites.
  • Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or quality.
  • Develop, use, and communicate performance metrics to measure equipment output, selects, utilization, downtime events, goods receipted to stock, etc. to determine proper handoff point.
  • Analyze and correct equipment installation, debug, and startup practices including debug/startup checklists to improve efficiencies, specifically directed toward enhancing installation schedules and performance immediately following startup.
  • Supervise and provide direction to engineers and techs during all aspects of equipment conversion such as installation, testing, debug, and startup.
  • Perform hands-on third-level troubleshooting of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems, directing engineers and techs as necessary to replace defective components and execute changes to solve equipment/process issues.
  • Provide training to engineers and techs on new equipment procedures as required for successful execution of installation, debug, startup and operation activities.
  • Develop new and/or modify existing equipment/process designs to improve selects, utilization, product quality, environmental compliance, and raw material / energy usage.
  • Assess condition and usability of existing equipment for fit and function with new installation plans.
  • Provide direction to redesign systems to solve performance issues, equipment interferences, and/or improve robustness.
  • Ensure updated documentation exists in each area affected by new or modified equipment/processes.

 

Travel:

  • Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase. Travel during design, development and/or deployment phases are greatly impacted by where the projects are located and typically range from 3-9 months but can extend to 1+ years.
  • Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:

  • 40 hrs+ M-F, adjusted hours and weekends may be required based on where the project is in the project life cycle.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS Elec Eng Technology, BS Elec Eng, BS Mech Eng Technology, BS Mech Eng, BS Chem Eng
  • 3+ years manufacturing experience working with process and/or automation equipment.
  • Self-starter and able to work in team environment.
  • Ability to work hands-on with the equipment using typical hand tools, instruments, and measurement devices.
  • Must be flexible with the ability to manage multiple work streams in a team environment adjusting to changing priorities with a strong focus on job site safety and proactive safety approach.
  • Process variable understanding: flow, temperature, rate, pressure, level
  • Familiar with process piping system design, including P&IDs

 

Desired Skills:

  • Equipment or software experience preferred: AutoCAD®, Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and MS Project, PLC and PC based systems, Motion Control

The range for this position is $74,146.00 - $101,951.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
