Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position: Lead moderate to large scale capacity or platform improvement projects safely, on time and on budget. Projects often include a new manufacturing process or platform. Coordinate with various functional organizations to ensure that all work streams are clearly mapped out with critical path work streams clearly identified and resourced appropriately. Effectively communicate across the organization to ensure support and priority.

  • Develop project scopes and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility
  • Ensure that projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget
  • Ensure resource availability and allocation
  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of projects • Develop a detailed project plan to track progress
  • Use appropriate verification techniques to manage changes in project scope, schedule and costs
  • Measure project performance using appropriate systems, tools and techniques
  • Report and escalate to management as needed
  • Manage the relationship with all stakeholders
  • Perform risk management to minimize project risks
  • Establish and maintain relationships with third parties/vendors


Key Responsibilities – Ongoing Tasks:

  • Manage medium to large projects that are key to the success of the corporation
  • Develop project scopes, schedules and budgets
  • Create and manage cross functional project teams
  • Remove obstacles to effective project execution by coordinating with functional support departments and internal and external customers and suppliers to obtain critical resources, information and results.


Travel Requirements:

  • Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina (Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory) and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.
  • Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase.
  • During the deployment phase of the project, travel is nearly full-time. Deployment phases typically range from 6-12 months, but can extend to 1+ years.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Standard work hours are M-F 8:00-5:00. However, overtime and shifted work hours are not uncommon and is expected at times. The amount and duration will vary as a function of the job position, project, and point in the project life cycle.


Required Education:

  • BS or MS degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Polymers)
  • Project Management Certification strongly desired. Experience
  • Technology development, manufacturing, or project management experience with results above expectation for significant projects (greater than $1 million) in manufacturing or experience with complex projects with multiple concurrent work-streams.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience running technology/manufacturing capital projects.
  • Experience using manufacturing systems and best practices to implement change: process, product, cost reduction, continuous improvement, manufacturing systems.
  • Experience with production & quality systems; problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Experience transferring technology into manufacturing
  • Exhibits sound decision-making skills and exercises good judgment; can effectively analyze and simplify data from multiple sources and set direction as required
  • Demonstrated active leadership ability to establish direction, set challenging goals, and define expectations in driving the global organization to achieve results
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating activities within functional responsibility and collaborating with other groups to achieve results
