Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Corning’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) is focused on aspects of manufacturing equipment across the following areas: Development / Design, Industrialization, Procurement, Deployment, Commissioning, and Startup. This position is in the Fiber Capital Programs (FCP) department within the Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) and is focused on equipment deployment, commissioning, and startup. The position is for a Mechanical Technician position to be a member of a project team and provide project leadership in the upgrading, building, installation, commissioning, and startup of Corning Optical Communications manufacturing systems in the optical fiber and cable division. This position will be responsible for leading Capital Projects to expand the capacity and capability of Global OFC Manufacturing Facilities.
Project Technician Role: Mechanical

- Perform hands-on installation support for new or modified production equipment.
- Provide mechanical discipline support in the construction, installation, debug, troubleshooting and startup of equipment and automated systems including hands-on to the point of turnover to operations at both domestic and international manufacturing sites; majority of time be spent on the floor working on equipment.
- Supervise and provide direction to internal maintenance, and outside contract trades during all aspects of equipment installation and conversion such as demolition, construction, installation, testing, and debug of production equipment.
Project Technician Responsibilities: Mechanical
- Assist in developing and using project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or quality. Adhere to all corporate, business unit and site guidelines.
- Safety – Ensure that all the project team has safety training, safety is analyzed in job plans and all safety requirements are met. Identify potential safety issues. Report and investigate all safety incidents.
- Develop understanding of process and equipment functions in area of responsibility
- Assess condition and usability of existing equipment for fit and function with new installation plans.
- Execute initial equipment set-up and debug up to the point of turnover to operations.
- Analyze and correct equipment installation practices to improve efficiencies, specifically directed toward enhancing installation schedules.
- Create, review, and update installation documentation and drawings as required.
- Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property, or quality.
- Re-design mechanical components to reduce installation cost, solve equipment interferences, and correct inadequate designs.
- Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to plants on-time, on-budget and satisfy performance measures.
- Perform hands-on troubleshooting, replacing or directing trades as necessary to replace defective components and execute changes to solve equipment/process issues.
- Provide training to internal or contract engineering techs, internal maintenance, and outside contract trades on new equipment installation procedures as required for successful execution of installation activities.
- Review, “redline”, and modify existing installation checklists, machine part lists, illustrations, machine specs, schedules, and complete drawing packages including follow-up with drafting services.
- Modify existing documentation to complete drawing packages, installation checklists, machine part lists, illustrations, and machine specs of production equipment.
- Procure and expedite materials needed to build or install new or modified equipment.
Required Education / Skills: Mechanical
- AAS Mechanical Engineering Technology, BS Mechanical Engineering Technology, BS Mechanical Engineering (Equivalent work experience of 10+ years may be considered in lieu of degree.)
- Ability to work hands-on with the equipment using typical hand tools, instruments, and measurement/alignment devices.
- Strong focus on job site safety and proactive safety approach.
- Determines and recommends the best solution from a series of alternatives within plant guidelines.
- Interpreting drawings and schematics to aid in troubleshooting. Familiar with process piping system design, including P&IDs
- Thorough understanding of mechanical drive trains, electrical and pneumatic actuators. Process variable understanding: flow, temperature, rate, pressure, level
Desired Skills: Mechanical
- Equipment or software experience preferred: AutoCAD®, Inventor, Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and MS Project
- Experience working on a manufacturing floor or construction environment.
- Displays a bias for action in situations of uncertainty, addresses issues and problems proactively.
- Works well in a team environment, is a self-starter and results oriented & effective in various settings to provide and present necessary information to project, department, and site leaders.
- Effective communication and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of the Optical Fiber manufacturing process.
- Familiar with the following:
- Precision positioning devices and laser alignment devices
- Equipment used for machine installation activities: man lifts, industrial equipment moving devices, hand tools, etc.
- Electronic calibration equipment
- Fluke Meters
- Precision flow measurement devices
Travel Requirements
- Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase. During the deployment phase of the project, travel may be full-time.
- Planning, Development and/or Deployment phases typically range from 3-9 months but can extend to 1+ years.
- Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina (Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Newton, and Wilmington) and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.
Hours of Work / Work Schedule / Flex-Time
- 40 hours+ M-F, adjusted hours and weekends may be required based on where the project is in the project life cycle.
- The position is overtime exempt. Overtime is not uncommon and is indeed expected at times, however the amount and duration will vary as a function of the job position, particular project, and point in the project life cycle.

The range for this position is $75,055.00 - $103,201.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
