Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
Seeking a dedicated and technically skilled Controls Technician to join the HSDC Development group within WL Technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and improving control systems for optical fiber manufacturing equipment and implementing new technological solutions. This role requires strong troubleshooting skills, a good understanding of electrical systems, and the ability to work effectively within a team.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Support the design, installation, and troubleshooting of control systems for development equipment.
- Design, install, and troubleshoot new controls capabilities and/or measurement instrumentation and techniques on industrial equipment.
- Collaborate with equipment design engineers, processing equipment deployment teams, and manufacturing receivers during all stages of technology development.
- Provide support for the startup of new equipment and processes.
- Provide training and documentation to support the transfer of new control systems and equipment.
- Document actions, testing results, observations, final project results, and research findings.
- Manage a team of electricians during equipment installations.
Travel Requirements:
- Domestic travel: <5%
Education and Experience:
- A two-year electrical or mechatronics technical degree is preferred, or 7+ years of work experience in a technical field for candidates without a degree.
Required Skills:
- Good electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting skills.
- Mechanically and electrically inclined.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, instrumentation and mechanical drawings.
- Basic understanding of PLCs.
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks as necessary.
- Strong decision-making skills.
- Excellent people skills and ability to work well in a team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Skills:
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or Inventor or similar design software.
- Ability to draft a scope of work for an electrical installation team and manage the team to complete the installation.
- Familiarity with safety and electrical codes related to industrial equipment and electrical installations.
- Experience with computer-based data collection and analysis tools such as PI.
- Capability to use diagnostic testing equipment.

The range for this position is $69,750.00 - $95,907.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
