Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
Corning’s development group is focused on aspects of manufacturing equipment and processes related to new product and process development, new equipment and process industrialization, equipment design, procurement, deployment, commissioning, and startup. This position is in Corning’s Wilmington Technology group and is for a Sr. Development Engineer capable of serving and leading in either equipment or process development roles. For equipment, intent is to lead design, upgrading, building, installation, commissioning, and startup of Corning Optical Communications manufacturing systems. This position will be responsible for leading Capital Projects to build equipment for the manufacture of novel fibers.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
• The position will be responsible for individual projects as well as sub projects of larger technology programs.
• Projects maybe either equipment or process developments.
• As project lead, position will be responsible for overseeing all phases of a project. For equipment, this includes funding, design, purchasing, shipping, logistics, installation, and handover.
• Development projects are expected to be in Wilmington, NC.
• Equipment project scopes will typically be between $1M and $15M.
• Project teams will consist of a mix of multi-disciplined resources and may include both matrixed and direct reports.
• When capital is required, the position will utilize Corning’s Capital Management System for project scope development and project execution.
• Equipment project responsibilities include:
o Managing 3-10 matrixed project team members.
o Interacting with leadership and peers throughout OFC to determine project objectives.
o Leading the use of the Capricorn process to fully define project scopes, develop funding requests, and execute projects.
o Defining and Building project teams.
o Traveling to the suppliers or project execution sites as necessary during project definition phase and deploying to the project site as applicable during the project execution phase.
o Managing communication with all stakeholders, steering team, and project governance team
o Managing project deliverables, schedule, and budgets to the approved project scope, as well as executing scope changes for approval.
Travel Requirements:
• Project deployments are expected to be sited in the Wilmington, NC plant. As such, expected travel would be <10% domestic, with some international possible, largely in project design and initiation phases.
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
• 40hrs+ M-F, adjusted hours and weekends may be required based on where the project is in the project life cycle.
• The position is overtime exempt. Overtime is not uncommon and is indeed expected at times, however the amount and duration will vary as a function of the job position, particular project, and point in the project life cycle.
Education and Experience:
• BS or MS in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical Engineering or similar.
• Minimum of 5 years experience in leadership/management roles for capital manufacturing equipment projects or similar manufacturing engineering leadership experience.
Required Skills:
• Technical proficiency to actively participate in the selection and development of technologies for a project and to guide the project team in design and troubleshooting activities.
• Technical proficiency to serve in lead or support roles for process development projects.
• Analytical skills to understand process data and mechanisms (e.g. mechanical, chemical, material).
• Analytical skills as relates to equipment construction and manufacturing cost/capacity calculations.
• Strong financial skills to manage project budgets and develop project business cases.
• Strong verbal & written communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with team members, stakeholders, and division leadership, including multi-national diverse teams.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and adapt quickly to changing requirements.
• Willing to deploy to project sites.
Desired Skills:
• Optical Fiber manufacturing experience – can be in development, engineering, or operations.
• Process and/or product development experience, including manufacturing transfer and implementation.
• Manufacturing Equipment design and development experience
• Software experience preferred: AutoCAD®, Inventor, Windows, MS Office suite including Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and Project.

The range for this position is $101,784.00 - $139,953.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
