Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

 

Corning is seeking an experienced Sr. Mechanical Design Technician to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for creating and refining mechanical equipment designs and layouts using advanced CAD tools, ensuring strict adherence to Corning Machine Drafting Standards. Your work will directly contribute to optimizing production systems, resolving design challenges, and delivering innovative solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, exceptional problem-solving skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.   

 

Key Responsibilities:   

 

  • Develop and deliver mechanical equipment designs and layouts using AutoCAD® 2023 and Inventor 2023, ensuring compliance with Corning drafting standards.   
  • Produce and maintain detailed drawing packages, build packages, machine part lists, illustrations, and equipment specifications for production systems.   
  • Assemble comprehensive machine design packages by reviewing and updating existing packages, ensuring accuracy and completeness of documentation.   
  • Redesign mechanical components to reduce installation costs, resolve equipment interferences, and correct design deficiencies.   
  • Review, redline, and oversee updates to installation documentation and drawings, collaborating with drafting teams to resolve design issues efficiently.   
  • Execute design changes to address equipment or process challenges, ensuring all designs meet functional and performance requirements.   
  • Perform elementary design calculations (e.g., statics, hydraulics, power transmission) to support both new designs and modifications of existing systems.   
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and project managers to ensure designs meet project goals and customer expectations.   
  • Provide detailed sketches and marked-up drawings to address evolving project needs.   

 

Required Qualifications:   

 

Education:   

  • Associate’s degree (AAS) in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering.   
  • Equivalent work experience may be considered in exceptional cases.   

Experience:   

 A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in mechanical design, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing setting.   

 

Technical Expertise:   

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD® 2023, Inventor 2023, and related CAD software tools.   
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical drive trains, electrical and pneumatic actuators, and system integration.   
  • Expertise in preparing complete drawing packages, from assembly to detailed drawings, for industrial equipment.   
  • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and experience interpreting pneumatic and electrical schematics.   
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, including machining and fabrication, to ensure efficient and practical designs.   

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • Highly motivated and results-oriented professional with excellent organizational skills.   
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing project requirements.   
  • Comfortable working in small teams and collaborating across departments to meet deadlines.   
  • Experience with precision measurement tools (e.g., tape measures, calipers, micrometers).   

 

Work Environment/Conditions:   

 

Travel Requirements:   

 

Travel is project-based and depends on the location of assigned work relative to the employee’s home location. Employees may select Concord or Wilmington, NC as a home location. When travel is required, it may be full-time for the duration of a project assignment. Home location is considered for project resourcing.

 Travel is typically low during project planning/design phases (<25%) but may be up to 100% during project Execution Phase. Deployments are normally in Wilmington or Concord, NC but may be international to India, China, or Europe.

 

On-Site Work:   

 

Some time on the production floor may be required gathering information about existing equipment.

The range for this position is $75,055.00 - $103,201.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
