Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Position Summary:

• This engineering position will be responsible for overseeing and resolving issues related to the build and delivery of custom optical fiber and cable manufacturing equipment.

• The Mechanical Engineer – Equipment Acquisition - will partner with Capital Deployment Project Leaders, Advanced AMT development engineers and equipment SMEs to deploy and integrate new technologies into capital deployment programs.


Specific responsibilities include:


• Tracking customer changes and documentation for equipment build drawing packages and resolving unknown / incomplete issues.

• Working closely with equipment suppliers and component suppliers to ensure tight control of cost quality and delivery schedules of capital equipment built.

• Support equipment checkout, quality control and delivery support for capital projects.

• Coordinating with Platform Owners to maintain documentation of equipment version differences and application specific modifications.

• Receivership of new technologies and platform improvements from AMT and PPD teams

• Drive completion of engineering designs, documentation for industrialization of technology platforms

• Identify and execute opportunities for global configuration design improvements for cost and performance.

• Develop technical skills and fundamental understanding of key optical fiber and cable manufacturing processes.

• Contribute to AMT projects through application of project task leadership and/or specific technical skills.

• Identify and execute opportunities for global manufacture / build improvements such as new supplier development and project bundling / batching for cost effectiveness.

• Support international shipment logistics and documentation requirements, including equipment crating and warehousing.

• Ensure all safety, environmental and IP compliance processes are met.

• Reports to AMT Equipment Acquisition Team Manager.


Required Skills 


• BS in mechanical engineering / engineering design, equipment technology or similar 4 year technical degree OR combination of a technical degree (design, electrical, mechanical) and additional relevant equipment-specific experience for the role.

• Minimum of 5 years experience in Optical Fiber manufacturing engineering, manufacturing technology, or related equipment design, build and improvement.

• Demonstrated proficiency as knowledge / technical expert in engineering projects, ability to define plan, responsibilities and execute effectively to meet deadlines

• Strong analytical skills including the understanding of equipment build costs and manufacturing costs

• Adapt quickly to changing requirements


Desired Skills


• SME level process engineering and analytical skills to complement equipment platform knowledge.

• Fiber manufacturing technical support, start-up support experience

• Masters Degree or greater in engineering, professional certifications. Capability for deeper equipment design improvement and realization.

• Able to communicate both in written and verbal formats complex business and technical issues to the various levels in our organization Soft Skills {Communication/Team/Leadership}

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours, position is in Wilmington NC

Travel Requirements: Typically 0-10% depending on location and travel needed to suppliers. Some international possible
