Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

The Sr Mechanical Technician position will be responsible for supporting the Fibermaking platform equipment design and documentation as it pertains to new optical fiber capacity projects, cost avoidance initiatives and replacements of obsolete parts in OFC manufacturing facilities for the AMT Fiber Technology Equipment Platforms and Projects (EP&P) department. The primary component of the scope will be to assist the Draw Platform Owner in execution of new capital equipment supply/planning and supporting the OFC engineering departments and manufacturing community with technology synergy. 

 

What You'll Do 

  • Partner with the Draw Platform Owner, OFC Technology Development and Division Engineering teams to specify the technology to be delivered. 
  • Support capital expansion projects with matrixed project team members interacting with leadership and peers throughout OFC to execute the equipment packages determined under each project scope. 
  • Research of obsolete parts currently in production and leading teams through design reviews for the selection of alternatives by the community. 
  • Travel to the project and manufacturing sites as necessary during project definition and closing phases to assess current equipment configurations, undocumented changes not released in Vault and submit redlines for review to the ECR and MCS process'. 
  • Manage design reviews with the project teams, applicable stakeholders, and governance team when new technology is to be integrated. 
  • Selection, design and testing of equipment improvements for draw platforms for capacity, cost, quality or standardization. 
  • Develop written documentation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for equipment and procedures developed to support the project objectives
  • Assist Draw Engineering departments when new critical problems and equipment replacement package and plans need to be supported to prevent unnecessary equipment downtime.
  • Interact with CAD Drafting Department and ETQ organizations to ensure compliance with documentation requirements and standards 

 

Experiences/Education 

  • AS in Mechanical or Industrial technical degree (design/drafting, mechanical, mechatronics, industrial) and additional relevant project and manufacturing equipment experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in leading small teams and projects for capital manufacturing equipment projects or similar manufacturing experience.
  • Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault experience and proficient user
  • Manufacturing Equipment design and development experience
  • Technical proficiency to actively participate in the selection of technologies for a project and to support the project team in design activities.
  • Technical or Manufacturing leadership experience
  • Familiarity with pneumatic components/controls

Travel Requirements 

  • Less than 25%,mostly within NC, but can include international sites 1-2x/year   
  • Ability to secure a passport

The range for this position is $75,055.00 - $103,201.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
