Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Purpose of the Position:
- Develop performance monitoring tools, understanding the sources of incoming quality variability and develop opportunities for cost reduction, for a portfolio of UV curable materials used in optical fiber and cable manufacturing.
- Understand the function of each component in a coating formulation, whether and how it translates to a measured fiber attribute and understand the effect of variability in coating mfg to variability in measured fiber parameters.
- Develop a feedback system to track performance of different batches of material.
- Use feedback system to correlate batch performance to a measurable quantity.
- Use understanding to enable cost reduction or improved quality.
- Lead or assist teams in resolving performance problems or quality issues.
- Develop an understanding of what is required to test an implement new coatings, new formulations and new vendors.
- Assist with adjustments to priorities as dictated by business conditions.
- Sponsor and lead projects for cost reduction, better performance, higher quality, increased capacity or other strategic initiatives.
Travel Requirements: Domestic and International (~ 25%)
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Monday-Friday. The position is overtime exempt. Overtime is not uncommon and is expected at times, however the amount and duration will vary as a function of business needs.
Required Education: BS/MS/PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with demonstrated polymers background
Required Years and Area of Experience:
- 4+ years relevant experience.
- Experience in Polymers focused area.
- Experience in manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding and experience around manufacturing and quality systems.
Required Skills:
- Thorough understanding of manufacturing and quality systems
- Thorough understanding of UV curable materials.
- Ability to make sound technical decisions within and outside area of expertise
- Strong communications skills and customer orientation
- Ability to work effectively on all levels of an organization
- Project management capability, particularly coordination of multiple, inter-related tasks
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis in a fast-paced environment
- Detailed understanding of chemical and fluid systems
- Use scientific method and engineering first principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed processes
- Intermediate to advanced skills for data collection and data analysis
Desired Skills:
- Experience with optical fiber and cable UV curable coatings.
- Experience in a manufacturing facility to understand data systems and quality systems.
- Six Sigma/DMAIC Greenbelt or Blackbelt certification.
- Project management experience.
Soft Skills:
- Work well both within a multi-disciplinary team, and independently with minimal oversight
- Strong communication and presentation skills
