Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Overview

The Project Technician – Mechanical provides hands‑on support for the installation, modification, and startup of production equipment across domestic and international manufacturing sites. This role is heavily floor‑based and works closely with internal maintenance teams and external contractors to ensure successful equipment installation and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute mechanical and automated system installation, construction, debugging, troubleshooting, and startup activities with a focus on safety.  Includes leading trades teams.
  • Conduct initial equipment setup and debugging prior to operational handoff.  Troubleshoot equipment issues and provide direction for needed repairs or modifications.
  • Identify opportunities to improve installation efficiency and implement best practices. Prepare, review, and update installation documentation, including drawings and checklists.
  • Redesign mechanical components to resolve interferences, improve installation cost, or correct design issues.  Assess existing equipment for compatibility with new installation plans.
  • Procure and expedite materials required for equipment builds and installations. Review and update part lists, specifications, and related engineering documentation.

 

Required Education & Skills

  • AAS or BS degree required (preferred degrees in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering).
  • Strong hands‑on mechanical aptitude, including use of tools, measurement instruments, and alignment devices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to job‑site safety.
  • Ability to evaluate alternatives and make sound recommendations within operational guidelines. 

 

Desired Skills

  • 7+ yrs experience in a manufacturing or related environment.
  • Understanding of key process variables (flow, temperature, rate, pressure, level).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting drawings, schematics, and P&IDs.
  • Experience with AutoCAD®, Inventor, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and MS Project.
  • Background in manufacturing or construction environments.  Familiarity with optical fiber manufacturing processes.
  • Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities, particularly in uncertain conditions.
  • Experience with precision alignment devices, laser alignment tools, industrial installation equipment, and electronic calibration instruments.

 

Travel Requirements

  • Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase. During the deployment phase of the project, travel may be full-time.
  • Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina and potentially international.

 

Hours of Work/Work Schedule/Flex-Time

  • 40 hours+ M-F, adjusted hours and weekends may be required based on where the project is in the project life cycle.
  • The position is eligible for overtime.

The range for this position is $75,055.00 - $103,201.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
