Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

Lead multi-disciplinary, multi-functional global teams in the development and delivery of a new fiber manufacturing platform aimed at delivering lower-cost capacity for future expansions within Corning’s Optical Fiber business. This position is accountable for all aspects of the design, from concept through purchasing, installation, and startup of the pilot/demo phase.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Program Leadership & Communication

o Serve as the primary conduit of communication and interaction with executive sponsors and steering committees throughout the life of assigned programs.

o Champion the program by clearly communicating its need at all organizational levels.

o Regularly communicate program or project status; prepare and deliver presentations and reports as required.

• Planning & Governance

o Develop or ensure development of comprehensive project plans, establish value, set objectives, and monitor adherence to master plans and schedules.

o Oversee funding requests for design, development, and pilot testing.

o Drive Capital Stage-Gate deliverables and readiness reviews; leverage appropriate readiness tools (e.g., PDRI) to reduce scope risk.

• Team Leadership

o Lead a matrixed, multi-disciplinary, multi-functional (potentially global) design team of 16+ resources.

o Participate in the recommendation and selection of Design Team members.

• Technical Delivery & Installation

o Oversee the development of new equipment from concept through quoting, covering all aspects of the facility including steel, process equipment, services, layout, and automation for 3 versions (Draw/BM, Draw-only, and BM Only) with the goal of lowering costs of purchasing, installation and operations.

o Work with Global Supply Management (GSM) to evaluate cost implications of design decisions.

o Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Finance to build estimating tools for factory operational costs.

o Develop robust installation strategies for “first of its kind” fiber-making equipment.

• External & Internal Stakeholder Engagement

o Secure and utilize external engineering, development, manufacturing, and other resources as appropriate.

o Interact with external suppliers to understand their challenges and requirements.

o Work closely with internal customers to establish a clear understanding of their functional requirements.

o Participate with Product Line Management in the development of business cases to ensure maximum value creation.

 

 

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree (required); advanced degree preferred.

• Extensive experience in managing complex, cross-functional, culturally diverse teams.

• Minimum of 15 years in technology, development, manufacturing, and/or manufacturing engineering with project management experience.

 

 

Required Skills:

• Demonstrated personal initiative with a track record of completing challenging business objectives.

• Effective leadership, organization, and planning skills; ability to handle ambiguity and changing priorities.

• Ability to turn internal customer requirements into actionable program deliverables.

• Strong communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills at all organizational levels.

• Ability to manage and leverage a team of diverse expertise, backgrounds, and styles.

 

 

Desired Skills:

• Multiple years of experience in at least two of the following areas: Commercial, Development, Manufacturing, or Engineering.

• Six Sigma Black Belt training, experience, and/or certification.

• Formal project management training; PMP certification preferred.

The range for this position is $183,877.00 - $252,831.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
