Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of the Position:
Plan, direct, and continually improve Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement activities at the Winston Cable plant.  Develop and implement systems, procedures, and projects required to successfully accomplish site, divisional, and corporate goals and objectives. 
Implement Lean fundamental concepts such as Workplace Organization/5S, Kaizen, value stream mapping, standard work, load smoothing, & continuous flow in order to improve performance in safety, quality, cost, delivery, and morale. 
Lead and/or participate in project teams to apply Process Excellence tools to yield process and flow improvements with the purpose of reducing cost, increasing capacity, or reducing complexity. 
Develop standardized tools, methodologies and business processes aimed at improving operational efficiency.  
 

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:
•    Support the plant Lean vision, including metrics, in support of plant objectives. 
•    Implement sustainable Lean programs, such as 5S, Visual Control, Continuous Flow, Level-loading, and Quick Changeover.  
•    Be able to prioritize work streams and make fundamental improvements in areas of concern.
•    Facilitate continuous improvement activities via Kaizens, Kaizen Blitzes, DMAIC projects & through daily interaction with site employees.  
•    Facilitate the planning and implementation of workplace flow & layout, as well as equipment installations, modifications, and moves according to Lean concepts.  Support projects as necessary to ensure capacity and flow requirements are attained. 
•    Lead and/or support projects involving cost reduction, quality improvement and error proofing, process optimization, and complexity reduction. 
•    Document work done & results achieved.  Develop & update standards as changes are made.  
•    Collect, analyze, evaluate and report product line data in order to increase product line performance.


 

Projects involved with: 
•     Lean manufacturing, Process improvement, Product Quality Architecture improvement, and Safety improvements.

 

Travel Requirements:
•    <5%

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
•    Normal business hours, M-F. 40+ hours / week. Weekend / off-hours coverage required to support a 24/7 operation. 

 

 

Required Education:
•    BS or MS degree in engineering (Industrial Engineering preferred) or a manufacturing related technical discipline. 

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:
•    2+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
•    Prior role in a capacity as a lean engineer or lean consultant strongly preferred. 

 

Required Skills:
•    Use scientific method and engineering principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed processes. 
•    Strong data analysis and statistical skills.  
•    Sound decision making and prioritization skills. 

 

Desired Skills:
•    Six Sigma / Lean Greenbelt or Blackbelt training required. 

  • Experience with SAP
  • AutoCAD or Inventor

The range for this position is $79,108.00 - $108,774.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
